1803 the supreme court announced for the first time the principle that a court may declare an act of congress void if it is inconsistent with the constitution. William Marbury had been appointed a Justice of the peace for the District of Columbia in the final four hours of Adams administration. James madison Thomas Jeffersons secretary of state had refused to deliver Marbury's commission. Soon after Marbury joined together with three other similar people had petitioned for a writ mandamus compelling delivery of the commissions.

The Louisiana Purchase which happened in 1803 was a land deal between the United States and France. Which then the United States purchased approximately 828,000,000 square miles of territory from France. Part or all of the 15 states were eventually created from the land deal, which is considered one of the most important achievements of Thomas Jeffersons presidency.

This expedition had occurred in 1804-06 which was led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. The expedition spanned 8,000 mi and took three years. Which is also known as the Corps of Discovery. Which was one of the first american expeditions to cross what is now the western portion of the United States.

These people where sent out by President Thomas Jefferson and where told by the United States Government to explore the South and west of the Louisiana Purchase. The impressment was the forcibly inducting men into the military service. It was employed by the army and the navy but as the years went on only the navy used it. The British had thought that the conditions were extremely harsh. The impressment of American sailors was one of the most important causes of the War of 1812. It was one of the causes of the war because it showed that the British didn't respect the Americans way of life. But in 1814 after the defeat of Napoleon Britain had ended this practice.

In 1807 Britain was fighting in the Napoleonic war the British navy sent out a number of ships to the blockade the French from obtaining supplies in the United States. But some of the crew deserted the ships and sought protection with the American authorities. The US Navy had recruited these men and they joined the crew of the USS Chesapeake.

The French warships soon began seizing American merchant ships in 1807 Britain retailed, prohibiting trade between neutral parties and France. The British also began seizing American ships and demanded that all american vessels had to check in at British ports before they could trade with any other nation.

The non-intercourse act of 1809 replaced the 1807 Embargo Act which had everted war with Britain and France but had backfired on the government by stopping all overseas trade. The purpose of it was to permit US trade with nation other than France and Great Britain. The non-intercourse act was signed on March 1st 1809 two days before the end of Jeffersons second term in office.
