What was it like to be an American in the early 1800's?
Being an American in the 1800's is having pride in your country because of the sacrifices that we have had to make. If your a women you have to sacrifice being educated and choosing your future. Other people who had to sacrifice were slaves because they had no rights, had no future, and would have to give up their families. If you were an American, promoting national unity was important. Especially for women and and slaves who had less rights.
Politics in the 1800's are getting very important very fast. Their isn't much conflict in political parties but patriotism is growing. Most ideas for the government came from Henry Clay, like the American System. The American system was about having taxes on imported goods, standardized currency, and the federal spending on transportation projects. Banks also were a new and helpful business in the 1800's in 1816 to be exact. “A world in which others controlled the course of their own development ... would be a world in which the American system would be seriously endangered.” -Benjamin Cohen
Art in America in the 1800s changed from what it was before because before the colonist brought the art traditions from Europe. Now in the 1800s people are bringing their own style into their art. Portraits are also a style of art that is popular because they capture personalities and emotions. Folk art was a more simple type of art that was colorful and and a direct message to it. Art had is having an impact on America because its shows the scenic of this country as well as important events. "Every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter." -Oscar Wilde
Music wasn't the most popular subject before the 1800s because it was usually played mostly in churches. There is a very abundant amount of music genres in the 1800s. For Example , there's classical music, spiritual , minstrel, and folk. The classical music in America is elegant, the spiritual music is religious, the minstrel songs had a mocking tone, and the folk music had fiddle in it. "My soul is full of longing for the secret of the sea, and the heart of the great ocean sends a thrilling pulse through me."-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Literature is such an important thing to have right now because it informs us on event all over the world and the people's voices now have another way to be heard. America was in important part for the writers because it gives them settings and events. For Example, James Fenimore who wrote The Pioneers and The Last of the Mohicans wrote about life on the frontier and about the American Indians. "The gifts of our colors may be different, but God has so placed us as to journey in the same path." -James Fenimore, The Last of the Mohicans
The Era of Good Feelings is a good time period for a lot of us. For others like slaves it's not a good time period to be in. Salves had no rights, were considered property, and were bought. Their living conditions were awful. For example, they got the bare minimum of what they needed to be healthy, would get severely beaten, and barely any clothing.
In the end all of these subjects shaped and helped America. Politics shaped America by giving it new ways to help the government like the American System. Art showed us the beautiful geography of America, important people, and important events. Music brought new types of genres to America. Literature helped give us a different perspective of key events and how life was lived.
