Mao Zedong was a Chinese revolutionary, political theorist, and communist leader who led the People’s Republic of China. Mao, while controversial, is still widely considered a savior of the nation. he is said to have systematically killed between 4 to 6 million people by sentencing them to die or by sending them to “reform through labor” camps. He organized mass repressions, established execution quotas, and defended his actions in these early years as necessary for securing power for “The People’s Republic of China”.
Mao Zedong was born on December 26, 1893 in Shaoshan, Hunan Province, China. Mao attended a small school in his village when he was 8 years old, he received little education. By age 13 he was working full time, He was working in fields. At age 14 Mao's father arranged a marriage for him but it never went through. when he turned 17 he enrolled in a secondary school in Changsha.the capital of Hunan Province.

Great leap forward
In 1958, in an attempt to introduce a more 'Chinese' form of communism, Mao launched the 'Great Leap Forward'. This aimed at mass mobilisation of labour to improve agricultural and industrial production. The result, instead, was a massive decline in agricultural output, which, together with poor harvests, led to famine and the deaths of millions. The policy was abandoned and Mao's position weakened
