Inverness Middle School Newsletter................December 2018

A Message from the Principal:

Dear Chargers,

November was a wonderful month celebrating gratitude at Inverness Middle School. I love the way our students and staff shared in showing appreciation for each other.

In December, we will be focusing on self-control. Self-control is the ability to control both our physical and emotional selves. Making the right choice at the right time is crucial to our success. It is said to be one of the most important character traits for us to possess. Many would say it is more important than intelligence.

I was wondering how many choices that involve self-control do I make in an average day. How many decisions do you think you make in a day? Pause to think. I bet it’s higher than you are even guessing.

Some research says that the average person makes about 35,000 choices every day. Categorizing choices as either conscious or counting those that our subconscious controls can affect the total true number.

Either way, we will all agree that we have many choices in a day. Our choices are powerful. Some of our choices will have no effect on our future. Others, however, are where the creativity, wisdom and beauty lie. These choices will have a huge impact on our future. Making good choices about who we spend our time with, when and what to do with our time, and what to invest our resources in is crucial to our overall success in life.

With that being said, I give this advice concerning our choices and the decisions we make...

First, choose your goals. As Stephen Covey says in his book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, “Begin with the end in mind". We should choose our goals carefully. A ship adrift will not reach its destination. If someone has no goals, that person is drifting. Drifting causes us problems because it will take much longer to get where we want to go.

Second, choose to reflect on choices. We should take time to reflect on who we spend time with and what we do with our time. Make decisions for the long term and understand that for every step we take toward our goal we are closer to achieving it. There is a compound effect that comes with continued self-control that is exhilarating. The more we focus, the more the benefits of our choices will be revealed.

Third, choose to stay committed. Understand if someone loses his or her way and makes a mistake we don’t want to wallow or delay our recovery… get back on track as fast as possible. We all make mistakes. The people that think and learn from their mistakes grow. Keep trying and don’t ever give up.

Lastly, self-control must be practiced. We can choose to make a small goal such as to making our beds or picking up after ourselves every day in December. And then do it. A goal selection must come from that person alone. It must be owned. Encourage yourself and stick with it.

Come share your goals for self-control this month and let me know how you are doing with accomplishing them. You did awesome with gratitude and I know you will rock self-control. Have a great month Chargers!

Wishing you all Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!
