Life at the Aquarium By: Jessica Huber

A journey through a day in the life of the Newport Aquarium

The Newport Aquarium is one of the many exciting things to do in Newport Kentucky. Everything offered at the Aquarium is reasonably priced and it is a great way to spend the day with family and friends.

There are so many unique exhibits at the Newport Aquarium. Close to the front entrance, there is one the most creative fish tanks throughout the entire place. Almost everyone in their lifetime has owned a Goldfish but what actually makes this goldfish so interesting are the details and beauty of the tank.

As a visiter winds their way throughout the exhibit, they come upon one of the many activities at the Aquarium. Ronnie Ortiz, age 21, is petting a shark for the first time. There are multiple sharks in the fish tank that you are allowed to pet with only 2 fingers at a time. The Aquarium instructors said "that out of all the sharks, these are the most friendly sharks to humans and they are more afraid of us then we are of them."

The penguin tank is one biggest exhibits that they have in Newport. There are many penguins in there for kids and adults to watch what they do i there daily lives. One of the best qualities to this Aquarium is they have a separate package that guests are able to purchase that include whoever to pet and take a picture with a penguin.

As Ronnie gets closer so that he can get a better picture of the shark, he tried to angle it just right so he could get the entire shark. He explained that the shark tank is his favorite part about the Aquarium.

The oversized shark tank is the crown jewel of the aquarium and laps around the entire exhibit. This exhibit is an 385,000 gallon tank, that is filled with several different kinds of sharks, sting rays, fish and more.

Do you know how many different kinds of fish there are in this world? Everyone knows about Nemo and Dory but there are some of the most unique looking fish with names that cannot be pronounced within this Aquarium.

The colors show a great representation of this photo. The blue water and light within the tank bring out the features of the fish. Ronnie is reading about one of the rare fish that is in the tank. He stated it was his first time ever seeing a fish like that and he didn't know they existed.

Here is a closer look at some of the sharks that guests are allowed to pet. As you can see, the water isn't very deep and it is also cold fresh water. These two sharks are one of a couple different fish that is in this small tank.

In the bottom left corner, there are two objects that look like plastic screws. As the instructor explained, those are eggs about to hatch that are from one of the two sharks.

This V shaped roped bridge is over 70 feet long that is hanging over the shark tank! The suspense of the bridge is thrilling because not only is it shaky but you can look down and see all of the sharks, sting rays and fish. Adults and children are allowed to go across at any time.

The Newport Aquarium, located in Newport, Kentucky is one amazing place to bring family and friends to enjoy and learn about the aquatic life. There are tons of different activities to do within the Aquarium! The Aquarium is open 365 days, so you can enjoy everyday of the year.

Coming soon in mid- July, the Aquarium will be extending and bringing in over 200 more creatures for everyone to enjoy.
