Effects that technology has on students' learning Does it help or hurt students?

Classrooms today encourage students to use technology as a support for learning in the classroom. However little is known on whether or not technology helps or hurts the learning process of the students.

In order to gain some insight into what citizens believe about technology in classrooms I interviewed two people on their experience of technology within the classroom. Victor Luciano will explain his experience of his education without the technology there is today. Victoria Luciano will explain her experience of schooling using 21st century technology.

This is Victor Luciano in the picture on and Victoria Luciano in the picture to the right

This was Victor Luciano's interview:

1. What did your teachers use in order to teach you certain subjects in class? My teachers used the an overhead to demonstrate problems that we needed to learn how to do on the board. Other than that there was not really any other forms of technology.

2. Was it harder to work without certain technologies that we have now? Yes it was harder. Since we did not have computers to help with activities it became a lot harder to find answers to our questions.

3. Do you think that computers and other forms of technology could have helped you learn and retain the knowledge better? Of course technology makes everything easier. With the technology today all you need to do is find the right tools to help gain the wanted results.

4. Do you think the technology that is used in classrooms today can be distracting to students instead of helping them? No I believe that it is not distracting because if the student wants to learn and excels in his/her classes technology will just be a tool to make activities more convenient (Luciano, Victor).

Here is Victoria Luciano's interview:

1. What kind of technology do you use in class? I sometimes use a laptop in class but I mostly use it after school

2. How do you use this technology? I use this technology for homework, Gmail, netflix, youtube.

3. How often do you use technology in class? I use it once in awhile. Most of the time it is the teacher using the computer for our benefit.

4. Do you find technology to be distracting in class? I actually find it to be a big help. It has become a big part of my education.

5. Do you believe that technology has helped you understand concepts taught in class better? It has helped me learn because things that I don't understand are better understood through the Internet.

6. What programs do you use to help do homework and or schoolwork? I usually use all Google Apps (Gmail, drive, Google search engine, easybib, etc.)

7. Do teachers encourage you to use technology inside and out of classroom? A lot of times it isn't encouraged because they want us to try things on our own. Another reason is that the teachers usually get the homework we do online as well as the answer sheets (Luciano, Victoria).

In the article "Revisit the Effect of Teaching and Learning with Technology" the authors explain that technology can be used as a system to help teach certain subjects, increase productivity, and provide new resources f or their students. In the conclusion of the article the authors expressed that learning with technology can be a positive experience for students because their cognitive abilities increase(Lee, 2013).
In Wu, Wang, and Hsu's article they experiment by using computer and tablet applications to help teach students some physics concepts. The students that participated in this study had increased their spatial relations abilities (2017).
In Yagci's article he argues that computer programming can increase a student's problem solving skills and with that increase success rates while in school (2016).

Conclusion:

Technology when used correctly in classrooms can help support the classroom experience. However classrooms should not completely focus their efforts on technology.
