Abolishment of Slavery
The end of slavery meant many things to the African Americans. Something that it meant to them was that they don't have to fight anymore. In Chapter six of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry when Cassie goes to strawberry with Big Ma, Mama, and Stacey Cassie becomes frustrated. When Cassie and Stacey going into the store they are not helped because they are black. Then when Cassie leaves the store she wasn't paying attention and she accidentally ran into Lillian Jean. When Cassie doesn't apologize Big Ma makes her apologize, Cassie doesn't understand why she has to but she needed to. When Cassie tells Mama that she doesn't get why she has to call Lillian Jean, Miz this is what Mama says,“Baby, you had to grow up a little today. I wish…well, no matter what I wish. It happened and you have to accept the fact that in the world outside this house, things are not always as we would have them to be.” (Mama 227) This really affected Cassie because she feels that no one is standing up for her but they are really just trying to protect Cassie from the white people. In the article Emancipation Proclamation, it states ".....I hereby call upon the peoples of declared to be free to abstain from all violence, unless in necessary self-defense...." this shows that people were tried for fighting for no reason.
