The 2nd Amendment Keeping freedom in the hands of the people

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

The 2nd Amendment gives you the right to bear arms. When the colonists broke away from the power of England they added this Amendment to make sure that the citizens could protect themselves and so the government couldn't have full power over them. This amendment was ratified by 3/4 of the states on Dec 15, 1791.

District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570 was in 2008. The supreme court heard second amendment challenges to Washington. An old ban on handgun possession and said that firearms in the home be stored unloaded and disassembled or held by a locking device. They also considered the amendment's meaning for the first time in 70 years.

The court stated that the 2nd amendment should not be understood as letting you keep and carry a weapon in any manner whatsoever and in any purpose. The court provided examples of laws it considered including:

>keep felons and the mentally ill from accessing firearms

>Forbid people carrying weapons in areas such as schools and government buildings.

>Impose conditions on the commercial sale of firearms.

The court stated that the list is not endless, and said that the 2nd Amendment is also consistent with laws banning '' dangerous and unusual weapons'' not in common use at the time, like M-16 rifles and others that are more of use in the military service. The Court declared that the laws should regulate the storage of firearms to stop accidents.

Theses images show how the 2nd Amendment allows us to own guns. We can go hunting, shooting at a range, and use them for self defense. The middle photo is guns being sold which the 2nd amendment also approves but with exceptions. Some states have banned different types of weapons while others might allow those banned weapons in their state. States may put different regulations on the weapons and restrict some but they are usually not to override the 2nd Amendment.
