West Asheville Waves

West Asheville Waves is a Summer League Swim Team designed for athletes ages 6-17 of all abilities. The team provides an opportunity for new swimmers to experience swim practice, low pressure meets and all the team spirit and fun that comes with being on a team! The Waves are all about summer fun while giving team members the chance to learn and develop as swimmers and teammates. Each athlete will learn to be comfortable in the water, be introduced to all 4 strokes, and learn skills in the pool that they can carry with them for a lifetime. All ages and abilities will work on stroke mechanics, strength and endurance. With a positive, supportive environment, the West Asheville Waves is the BEST introduction to the sport of swimming. Learning and summer fun are the priority!

With over combined 30 years experience in the sport, Waves Coaches pride themselves on creating and engaging and educational on deck environment where Waves athletes will learn the ropes of the sport in a fun and safe environment. Fun and learning are the top priorities of a Waves practice!

The season starts May 21st

Athletes on West Asheville Waves athletes will:

  • Learn and develop the 4 competitive strokes.
  • Learn and develop racing dives.
  • Become more comfortable in the water with games!
  • Review and learn basic swim safety rules.
  • Participate in fun meets that emphasize teamwide and personal improvement
  • HAVE FUN!!!
  • Become stronger and more confident swimmers!

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the season start? What's the practice schedule?

The season will begin May 21st and end August 1st. Our first swim meet is scheduled for the middle of June and our last meet is scheduled for late July. Athletes and families practice three times per week offered on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

  • 4:30 - 5:00: Waves Swim School (pre-team members)
  • 5:00-5:45: 10 and Under athletes
  • 5:45 - 6:45: 11 year olds and up
  • When School Gets out we will offer an additional practice on Wednesdays from 8:30-9:45 for the team (not pre-team).

When can we join?

There's a MEET AND GREET at the Asheville School on May 12th @ 10:30-12:00. Come in and meet the coaches, your teammates, and sign up for the team!

  • Online Registration opens April 14th! Athletes may join at any point during the season as long as there is space available.
  • *** Credit Card processing will be available by April 22nd. Reserve your space by selecting the "Pay with Check" option on the payment page.***
  • Hard Copy registration packets will be available at the Meet and Greet May 12th.

We’re very interested! How much is Waves?

Two Pricing Options. Families can choose to pay for the summer season up front at a discount, or families can choose to pay for the season on a monthly basis. Both options require a $40 registration fee due no later than the first day of practice.

  • Upfront for the season: $310 (non-refundable). Includes registration fee.
  • Installments: $100 per month plus the one time $40 registration fee.
  • Waves Payment schedule: $140 due either May 12th or May 21st. Payments will then be processed on June 2nd, and July 2nd.
  • The installment billing option is only open to families with a credit card on file.
  • Pre-Team Upfront for the season: $250 (non-refundable). Includes registration fee.
  • Pre Team Installments: $75 per month plus a one time $40 registration fee.
  • Pre Team Payment Schedule: $115 due either May 12th or May 21st (first day of practice). $75 Payments will then be processed June 2nd, and July 2nd.
  • The installment billing option is only open to families with a credit card on file.

My athlete has guitar lessons on Wednesdays and will not be able to attend practice. Can they still participate on the team?

Absolutely! We understand that athletes have other obligations outside of the pool and encourage our members to excel in everything. At the beginning of the season, we’ll release our curriculum so you know what you’ll be missing should you need to miss a few days. Shred on bro!

If you're going on vacataion for part of the summer, no worries! All athletes can participate. Make sure to let a coach know of your planned vacation.

What will we need to bring to practice?

All athletes will need three things at every practice. A SUIT is priority one. Boys should wear a jammer. Girls should wear a one piece suit, without dangly, frilly, or shiny things. GOGGLES. Athletes will need goggles that cover the eyes only. Please no diving masks that cover the nose. A SWIM CAP. Caps are provided and come with the cost of membership.

Who are the Coaches?

Coach Charlie McCanless

Coach Charlie McCanless began his swimming career at the age of 6 and swam his way through college, finishing at East Carolina University as a Varsity Record Holder and Team Captain. While in Greenville, NC he worked for Greenville Country Club as Head coach and after graduation he worked for SwimMac Carolina. Following a move to Boston, Charlie worked for Charles River Aquatics as Senior Group Coach and a primary Age Group Coach. He's been Head Coach of Smoky Mountain Aquatic Club since 2014 and has worked with all ages and abilities from Junior National Level Qualifiers to children brand new to the sport. Charlie is still a competitor himself and a proud US Masters Swimmer.
