Pitch For Your Project Case study #4

Chepstow Boxing Club

Chepstow Boxing Club was established in 1976 and provides safe and structured boxing sessions for both children and adults in Chepstow. Although the club is well known for its boxing performance it also has a focus and determination to work with children to develop life skills such as commitment, discipline and teamwork. The coaches’ dedication to working with all young people, including individuals with additional learning needs and mental health needs particularly impressed the panel of MHA staff and tenants. They have also formed partnerships with other local organisations to improve the lives of many within the community and this was another factor in Chepstow Boxing Club’s successful Pitch.

Their Pitch application informed us that the club was in desperate need of refurbishment and with a full membership and waiting list in place, it has outgrown itself. In order to reduce their waiting list, they needed an extended training area to be able to increase participation. The club also needed new kit so that new and existing members, of which 25% are MHA tenants, can be fully equipped without putting extra costs onto families where money can already be tight. Chepstow Boxing Club have been very resourceful in their own fundraising and have also sought funding from organisations such as Chepstow Town Council, Sports Wales and the National Lottery.

Monmouthshire Housing through Pitch For Your Project have funded £1000 for equipment for the refurbished club as the benefits to our tenants are numerous.

  • Health & wellbeing -
  • Educational
  • Financial .
  • Sense of community
  • Sense of achievement

Quote from Steve Woods – Coach

As part of the coaching team at Chepstow ABC we are always looking to improve the club, the facilities and the equipment available to the boys and girls that attend the sessions 3 times a week. With the funding from MHA we will provide new boxing gloves, pads and bags so that more children can come along and benefit from being a member of the club.

Quote from MHA Tenant

My son was struggling at school and was forever in trouble with teachers, getting in arguments with other boys and generally lacking any direction or focus in life. He joined Chepstow Boxing club and his whole attitude has changed. The teacher feedback has improved and his overall attitude has completely changed. This is due to the discipline, commitment and team spirit at the club.

Quote from Keiran Woods – Boxer & MHA tenant

Boxing has greatly improve my life – from giving me something to do instead of hanging out , getting into trouble with my friends, improving my fitness and overcoming health issues from Asthma, and allowing me to compete at a national level, to making it a part of my future career in that I have now gained my coaching card and can start to give back to the club and the children.
