Harris Bilingual March 2020 Newsletter

Happy March Harris!

March brings with it more sunshine and warmer weather. As many of you prepare for fun trips during Spring Break, remember that we will start several after school programs like: the GASP program, our new Be Strong & Be Fit running program for girls as well as the Garden Club the week of March 23! There are many spring sports/activities for your children to get involved in as well with the City of Fort Collins. Be sure to check out their offerings on their website: https://www.fcgov.com/recreator/

As you know, our weather is very unpredictable. Please make sure to send your children to school in layers so they are always prepared. We will always be outside if the weather is 15 degrees or above – morning and recess. If we ever need to cancel an afterschool activity, we will always send a Robo call and post cancellations on the website!

We will be hosting our annual Family Math Night on Tuesday, March 10th in the gym from 4-6 PM. Bring your family to enjoy a yummy dinner and play math games! All families who participate will receive a math activity to take home! We will also host our Conferences on March 10th and March 12th from 3-7 PM. Parents will be receiving invitations from their child’s homeroom teacher for the conference.

At the end of March, we will begin our CMAS testing. This year, the 3rd-5th graders will test in Reading/Math. Our 4th-Graders will also test in Social Studies and our 5th-grade students will have an additional test in Science. This is their time to shine! Please help us by making sure that your child eats breakfast (at home or at school), is on time, well rested and prepared for each day. We will provide snacks after testing, and will ensure that they get extra recess each day - Thank you for your support!

The dates for CMAS testing are the following:

  • March 31-April 2
  • April 7 to April 9
  • April 14 to April 16

Finally, a huge thank you to OtterBox and the Closed-2-Open program. Several employees from OtterBox, including several of our parents came to paint our new multipurpose room and reorganize the art room!

Our staff also wants to thank all the parents for the delicious meals that have been provided for Staff Appreciation - we cannot thank you enough for your kindness. Have a wonderful day!

Sincerely,

Norma Huerta-Kelley, PhD

Principal

Pathway Seal of Biliteracy

For the second year in a row, we will be offering a Pathway Certificate to Biliteracy for our 5th grade students during their graduation. Poudre School District currently offers the Seal of Biliteracy to graduating seniors who meet specific language requirements. Nationally, many dual language schools offer Pathway Certificates of Biliteracy for 8th grade, 5th grade and 3rd grade students. The criteria to earn this seal on their graduation certificate is a combination of both assessment data and classroom assignments. We are very excited to be able to offer a “pathway” to our future middle school students. It will recognize their hard work and encourage them to continue on their path to becoming bilingual and biliterate! For more information, please follow this link: (https://www.psdschools.org/node/1182)

GASP!

The Girls Advancing Scientific Progress (GASP!) after school program, offered by the CSU Environmental Learning Center, is returning to Harris Bilingual Elementary in March 2020. This program offers fun, female-led opportunities for girls to develop science skills and apply them to studies of their local environment. We focus on environmental aspects of science, studying topics such as weather, geology and wildlife. Students will engage in scientific exploration, asking questions and making discoveries while exploring the natural world.

Who: Girls in grades 3-5

Where: Harris Bilingual Elementary School

When: Mondays, March 30-May 4 at 2:40-4:10pm (includes a family event after the program on May 4)

Cost: $20 per student for the entire six-week program

Registration forms will be sent home at the beginning of March. Registration is first come, first serve; please return registration forms to the Harris front office. After the program is full, we will start a wait list with the remaining registration forms.

BstrongBfit

BstrongBfit is a free program offered by Healthy Kids Club at Harris Bilingual this spring for 4th and 5th grade girls. The goal of the eight-week program is to promote positive self-esteem and physical fitness through running and physical activity. We will conclude our program by running a 5K fun run on May 2, in Berthoud, Colorado. The program will be on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 2:45-4:00, beginning 3/4/20.
