Exploring SolutionsE types of solutions

C.10.E Distinguish between types of solutions such as electrolytes and nonelectrolytes and unsaturated, saturated, and supersaturated solutions

1. Initiating Progress Know what electrolytes and nonelectrolytes and unsaturated, saturated and supersaturated solutions are. DIY Create a 2-tab foldable giving the definition of electrolyte and non-electrolyte. Create a 3-tab foldable for unsaturated, saturated, and supersaturated, giving the definition and describing what happens when a small amount of additional solute is added to each type of solution. Glue the foldables into your notebook. Assess: Complete the Level 1 Progress Check.

2. Approaching Expectation Classify types of solutions such as electrolytes and nonelectrolytes and unsaturated, saturated, and supersaturated solutions. DIY Sort the cards into 5 groups: unsaturated, saturated, supersaturated, electrolyte, nonelectrolyte. Get key from teacher to self-check. optional DIY Classify solutions in lab as "electrolyte" or "nonelectrolyte" using the conductivity tester. Assess: Warm Up to Science #72 Progress Check

3. Meeting Expectation Distinguish between types of solutions such as electrolytes and nonelectrolytes and unsaturated, saturated, and supersaturated solutions. DIY With a partner, complete the POGIL exercise "Unsaturated and Saturated Solutions" then self-check. Assess: Warm Up to Science #74 Progress Check

4. Exceeding Expectation Judge the impact on biological systems by solutions such as electrolytes and nonelectrolytes and unsaturated and saturated and supersatureated solutions. DIY: Skim one of these websites; think about solutions in real-life. Assess: Classify a real-life solution by type (electrolyte/nonelectrolyte and/or unsaturated/saturated/supersaturated) and identify the solute(s) and solvent.
