Born- June 24, 1895, William Harrison Dempsey in Manassa Colorado, he grew up in a poor family in Colorado, West Virginia, and Utah.He dropped out of school at grade 8. 1919- won the heavyweight title. 1954- charter inductee to boxing Hall of Fame. In September 1926, Dempsey fought the Irish American Dempsey ended up losing his title.Among his opponents for World Heavyweight Champion were Fireman Jim Flynn, the only boxer ever to beat Dempsey by a knockout when Dempsey lost to him in the first round

One of his popular quotes is A champion is someone who gets up when he can't.
