Shakira By: Nikki Johnson

About Her

Shakira was born in Colombia on February 2, 1977. Shakira is considered one of the most successful Latin American singers of all time. At the age of 10 belly dancing was a regular activity for Shakira. Going from belly dancing to the theatre, her local theatre helped her to get a record deal with Sony Corporations. After Sony's talent competition, a record deal was signed in 1990. She accomplished many things, including, her first album Magia in 1991 and Peligro in 1993. Her first two albums were not that popular. Taking a break from the music industry, she acted in a Latin soap opera called El Oasis. After that point, Shakira became well known. Upon coming to America, she recorded two more albums. One named Laundry Service was Shakira's first American pop album. In 2000 MTV Unplugged, another one of her American albums, won a Grammy award for best Latin pop album.

Connection to the 8 themes

Cultural interaction is the theme that Shakira best fits into. She first started her career in Colombia by releasing a few albums. She also later acted in a Latin soap opera. Although she had become popular in Colombia, when she arrived in the U.S. she hit big. Her Colombian influenced music struck America.

"In this life, to earn your place you have to fight for it." -Shakira

This quote shows who Shakira is as a person, it shows that she had to fight against a lot to get where she is. When she first released her music she wasn't very popular. She got on a Latin soap opera and became very popular from then out. And of course, there will always be people that go against you. And obviously she fought them and beat them.
