RING PATTERNS A look back at August 2017

August . . . ahhhhh . . . the herding dog days of summer . . . during which collies earned 3 Reserve Bests in Show, 28 Group placements, 1 Reserve Best Owner-handled in Show and 16 National Owner-handled Series placements. All 3 Reserve Bests in Show were awarded to GCHG Sylvan Argent Hollywood And Vine by Judges Edie Sullivan, Carolyn Herbel and Murrel Purkhiser. The Reserve Best Owner-handled went to GCHB Highcroft Mar-Jo Daisey under Carolyn Herbel.

Two collies, one rough and one smooth, earned the eight Group 1 awards. Seven of the awards went to the rough, GCHG Sylvan Argent Hollywood And Vine and one to the smooth, GCHB 5c's Little Boy Blue. These were the judges who saw the collie as the top herding dog of the day: Sulie Greendale-Paveza, Edie Sullivan, Nancy Simmons, Victoria Jordan, John Wade, Judi Bendt and Ken Buxton. Other placements included three Group 2s, six Group 3s and ten Group 4s. Of all the placements, the Rough Variety came away with a ribbon 17 times compared to 11 for the Smooth Variety.

The month's largest number of herding dogs shown at a show in which a collie placed was 163 at Harrisburg Kennel Club in Pennsylvania on July 8. The award was a Group 3 and the honor went to the rough collie, GCHB Breezy Acre's In Your Face. The judge was Jim Frederiksen whose initial breed is the Collie.

Very few group judges place both the rough and smooth in the same group. It happened this month when Harry "Butch" Schulman placed both the smooth and the rough at Owensboro's River City Kennel Club in Kentucky on August 24. His awards went to GCHG Bandor's The Wyching Hour and GCH Highcroft Mar-Jo Daisey, respectively.

Eight collies awarded Group placements in the National Owner-handled Series: Herding Group judges placed collies 16 times in the AKC's National Owner-handled Series. The smooths took nine of the placements compared to seven for the roughs. There were three Group 1 awards -- two for the roughs and one for the smooth.
