Glasgow Hawks v aberdeen Grammar Balgray 14.09.19

Entry £12. +65s £5. U18 Free.

A warm welcome to Balgray in this our 2nd season at this historic venue.

We are grateful to Kelvinside Academy, the Board of Governors and the school for making us so welcome and actively supporting our organisation.

Thanks also to all our generous sponsors for their valued support of Glasgow Hawks.

This will be an interesting season with a new Premier League that I think will prove to be very competitive and entertaining.

Head coach Andrew Hill has been incredibly active with his coaching team and has drawn in a lot of new young and exciting talent that we expect to progress quickly.

They will be assisted by some ‘old heads’ such as Gary Strain, Andy Kirkland, a rejuvenated Davy Milne, Paddy Boyer and of course captain Stephen Leckey.

We are very proud of the 3 world cup participants that were recently wearing the Hawks jersey on a regular basis and would wish all success to Scott Cummings (who coincidentally is a former Kelvinside pupil), George Horne and Zander Fagerson. It would not be too much of a surprise to also see both Matt Fagerson and Grant Stewart getting called up at some point to strengthen the squad during the tournament in Japan.

Sunday 22nd September at 8.45am against Ireland will tell us a lot!

Today’s Visitors- Aberdeen Grammar

We enjoyed some very competitive matches against Aberdeen Grammar when we were both last in the Premier League and we look forward to renewing our friendly rivalry.

Their strong off-field organisation has paid dividends and they will be highly competitive this season getting off to a great start with a home win against a very good Edinburgh Accies side last week. (30-17)

A warm welcome to the Aberdeen players and coaches as well as Gordon Thomson and his committee. Gordon is an excellent choice as Premier Clubs representative on the Scottish Rugby Council. We look forward to supporting him in that role to help take club rugby forward.

I hope you enjoy Balgray and the brand of rugby we will be playing and look forward to your company.

This week sees stand in Captain, Callum Harrison move to full back to allow space for the experienced Davie Milne. Murray Godsman also comes in after impressing for GHK with Max Priestly moving to the bench.

Sandy Greig also comes onto the bench after getting game time for Cartha last week in his senior debut. He will look to be the 10th Hawk to make his Premiership debut this season after an impressing in the summer during the 7’s. He is one to keep an eye on for throughout the season.

In the forwards it is great to get veteran Andrew Kirkland, back from injury, and Struan Dow, who has moved back down for University. Both will bring energy and have a phenomenal work rate around the pitch. Lyall Archer moves back to his preferred spot at loose head with Ewan Rintoul moving onto the bench while Gavin Armstrong, who was a last minute acquisition to the squad against Selkirk, retains his place on the bench after impressing in training this week.

Obviously a disappointing loss v Selkirk and the score wasn’t a true reflection of the competitiveness of the game. On reflection until the last 10 minutes we had the same number of entries into the 22m as Selkirk however they were just far more clinical at converting their opportunities than we were. This is an area we have worked hard on in training to rectify to put us in a position to be competitive.

There has been a real buzz this week with a number of senior players being able to contribute to training as part of their return to play brining a real energy and clarity to everything we do.

Grammar had a great result against Accies last week and we look forward to welcoming them to Balgray as our first guests of the competitive season.
