Viktoria's Secrets Priya - SOftware Developer in Test

Priya / Software Developer in Test (SDET)

Priya joined as SDET in Jumio's office in Bengaluru six months ago.

Q: What do you do at Jumio?

A: I work as a Software Development Engineer (in Test) at Jumio. My team and I make sure that we do not ship defective code unintentionally - all the while making sure that whenever we release a new version of our product, it is thoroughly tested in every possible aspect before it reaches the hands of our customers. From writing tests for sanity to end-to-end test cases, we hunt for possible scenarios in which our product can fail and make sure that it is tested and automated beforehand.

Q: What was Jumio’s selling point for you - What made you say “I wanna work there!”?

A: I learn something new every day. Jumio offers me that freedom to explore and it’s one of the main reasons that attracted me in the first place. Given the large-scale impact of what our products can have in the real world, you acquire a sense of responsibility and that gives me the motivation to give my best every single day. Being able to work on what I like is the icing on the cake. Jumio has invested heavily into Machine Learning and rightly so.

It feels good to know that you are working on cutting edge technology.

Q: Before Jumio, did you have similar experiences at previous companies or was this rather new to you when you started?

A: My previous company specialized in the healthcare domain. I held a similar role to what I am doing here at Jumio but the differences lay in the way things are done. Earlier, I had to jump through hoops to sell any ideas I had but here at Jumio, the flat hierarchy gives me the visibility and courage needed to bolster the changes that I bring to the table.

Q: What didn’t you expect about the role?

A: I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of freedom given to me in terms of work hours. I do not have to worry about my logged hours as long as I am able to hit all the promised targets.

Also, there are no solid boundaries imposed on your role - in case you are curious about how things happen outside your role, you are very well encouraged to pursue the things of interest and upgrade your skill set. This practice deserves a big thumbs-up from me.

Q: What challenges did you face and what did you learn from that?

A: Staying prepared for challenges is necessary and is what keeps you from getting bored. Getting creative about resolving hindrances and actually seeing it work gives me a huge dose of satisfaction and quite frankly, that is what makes me get out of bed and go to work in the morning. With such a fantastic team that I work with, I seldomly run out of options to overcome obstacles.

Q: What would you say to potential employees wanting to work at Jumio? What qualities should they have?

A: Having a broad mind helps immensely into accepting what is at stake and knowing what needs to be done. Taking responsibility and owning the problems that come with it are crucial to any role that you hold. These qualities get recognised and rewarded at Jumio and that gives us even more incentive to strive towards perfection. Also, being able to think in code helps you hone your skills even further. Last but not the least, communicating with others clearly saves a lot of time and effort and should never be taken lightly.
