Gas masks used in World War One were made as a result of poison gas attacks that took the Allies in the trenches on the Western Front by surprise. Early gas masks were crude as would be expected as no one had thought that poison gas would ever be used in warfare as the mere thought seemed too shocking. This item would help you live in trench warfare ( ''Gas'' ).
''The steel helmet was invented and fielded in response to increased weaponry on the battlefield due to advances in artillery and fragmentation. World War I witnessed the first wide spread use of the steel helmet, which remains a signature piece of equipment in modern warfare'' (Watanabe) .

During World War I you would need a bayonet as it was primarily used as a splendid means of toasting bread, and for opening cans, to scrape mud off uniforms, poking a trench brazier or even to assist in the preparation of communal latrines. It was also used as a weapon although it was outdated compared to the other artillery in the war. It was still used by all sides of the war (Weapons).
Field Emergency Medical Kit
The Field Emergency Medical Kit was used by all sides of World War I. It was used often in the front line when soldiers got hurt after they went over the top of the trench. It was used during battles to heal soldiers under the trench when they got injured. You would need this in World War I to be able to be safe and clean your wounds (''First'').

During World War I it was essential to dig trenches to stay out of the line of fire. Most sides of the war dug trenches with shovels. This worked well and fast and this was an essential necessity to survive in World War I (''Entrenching'').
