Enlisting the community in biodiversity preservation Noon Valley, Uttarakhand, India

PROJECT OVERVIEW: The project helps train students to become environmental champions through a tree planting campaign and to realize their role in climate control. In spite of having to deal with delayed monsoon and forest fires, the team has managed to arrange for the plantation of more than 12000 trees in the Doon Valley. We help participants understand local and endangered tree species that can thrive in hilly climate, generate higher oxygen content, is beneficial for wildlife and prevent soil erosion. The project guides students and senior citizens on planting saplings based on the weather patterns and to periodically monitor their survival. The digging and planting activity has generated employment for the locals. A portion of the budget has been set aside to replace the trees in case of damage. The tree plantation activity allows students to earn Social Capital Credits for their schools which could be redeemed for school infrastructure such as water fountains.
