J.R.Briggs Family Newsletter October 24, 2018

As October flies past us, please take a moment to reflect on all that the month means to us at JRB. The entire school, as directed by the student council, has focused on Anti-Bullying for October, complete with a puzzle signed by everyone that visually expresses how we all fit and work together to make our school complete.

Students in the Ashburnham-Westminster School District have been to Boot Camp—Design Thinking Boot Camp that is. The in-school "camp" is part of a statewide effort to get students excited about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education. Throughout the last two weeks, Briggs students have taken part in hands-on mini design challenges to learn attitudes and work strategies such as scoping a problem, teamwork and persistence. Ask you child to describe the challenge s/he completed and talk about s/he learned:

  • The LEGO Duck Challenge, focusing on creativity
  • The Back-to-Back Build Challenge, focusing on communication skills
  • Operation Welcome Mat, creating habitat enhancements for the school's science garden and nature trail

In November and December, Briggs students will apply what they have learned to a district-wide design challenge: Can you help the Gingerbread Boy make it safely across the river? We can't wait to see our students' creative solutions!

Picture retake day is November 8th!
