semester wrap-up real-world projects, exploring careers, personal development

It's been a busy semester full of project work, tours, speakers, and many opportunities for personal and professional growth. GO CAPS is unlike any high school experience available, and we hope you catch the excitement and pride of the work our students have accomplished.

"GO CAPS opens the door to endless opportunities to make network connections with business leaders within the area. Recently, the Agri-business/Food Systems strand traveled to a locally owned and operated business located in Purdy, MO called Norm's Farms. At Norm's Farms we got a 'behind the scenes' tour and discovered the benefits of the crop that they produce and process called elderberry. Did you know that elderberries carry a powerful antioxidant called anthocyanin that helps keep the immune system strong and resilient?" Kensie Darst, Agri-Business & Food Systems (Senior, Aurora High School)

"I recently started a project where my partner and I created the new website for GO CAPS Monett <click the link to check out their work!>. Throughout the project I learned a lot about patience and being flexible. With this project there were many obstacles that we had to overcome in order to be successful. We even had to move locations so we were able to work properly. There are still some updates to be completed for the website, but I'm very proud of the work that we have done." Nick Pilkenton, Business & Technology Solutions Strand (Senior, Monett High School)

Engineering & Manufacturing students recently completed a project for EFCO Corporation in their Screen Line Downtown facility. The task was given to create a moveable cart that was better equipped to handle all sizes and varieties of screens. The students spent a great deal of time researching, designing, and constructing a new cart which had size extensions in order to accommodate larger screens in production. Students used an innovative design and approach to add metal extensions and wheels to the cart. This cart will allow easier transport of EFCO material throughout the production process. It will also increase safety as the cart’s metal extension allows screens to securely fit when being transported, eliminating the chance for carts to fall over when large product is being moved. This was an incredible experience for both our students and for EFCO Team Members! We especially appreciate the help and guidance from Jorge Vazquez & Antonio Arreloa, production leaders from EFCO's downtown facility.

"My favorite experience this year has been job shadowing. Having the opportunity to see all the different parts of healthcare has been very interesting, and I have learned a lot about the career areas that I might be able to pursue later in life." Ashley Gaches, Medicine & Healthcare Strand (Junior, Monett High School)

"It was in that moment that I knew for certain what I wanted to be. I wanted to be a band director." Brittain Cooper, Teacher Education Strand (Senior, Monett High School)

Being an instructor for GO CAPS is a welcome change from the regular classroom. I am able to watch my students work in an embedded environment that allows them to learn first-hand from our business partners. Jack Henry & Associates (JHA) is an excellent location for our strand. The JHA employees go above and beyond to partner with my students and to involve the students in many aspects of the company including tours, job shadowing, project work, and guest instructors. Marlena Driscoll, Instructor, Business & Technology Solutions

"For our December project the Agri-business and Food Systems Strand researched food insecure countries. After each student conducted extensive research about their food insecure country, they quickly realized how lucky we are to be in a very food secure country. They learned that most of the food insecure countries suffered from multiple natural disasters a year, civil wars, and poor government that did not aid the food security issues. With this project they had to come up with a solution that could make a positive impact in the food security, with most of their suggested solutions focused on education and creating better water well systems." Kailee Mallory, Instructor, Agri-Business & Food Systems

"Teacher Education students have spent the past several weeks working in classrooms of their choosing. We have had teachers at MES, CPE, MIS, MMS, and Trinity Lutheran host our students. These teachers have not only provided a welcoming and nurturing environment to their students but to ours. Our students have had numerous opportunities to work with individual students, small groups of students, large groups of students, and with our counseling staff. We know that our Teacher Education students are greatly benefitting from the knowledge and skills provided by these wonderful teachers." Peg Winfrey, Instructor, Teacher Education

Engineering & Manufacturing students just finished a hands-on project from EFCO Corporation that required them to learn many skills of the industry. Skills such as AutoCAD and machining allowed designs & ideas to become reality as students learned to work within the parameters of a customer’s directives. Teamwork, collaboration with other classes, and problem solving are just a few of the professionalism skills developed along the way. This project allowed them the hands-on component of building their own design and understanding the necessity of continuous improvement to find the best solution. We are very thankful to have been given this opportunity and look forward to what this group will accomplish next! Marty Lewis, Instructor, Engineering & Manufacturing
