First friday open studio: Kids in Focus

opening gala

Friday, April 7 | 5:30–8 p.m.

30 at-risk kids. 14 photographers. 60 photos. 1 powerful exhibit.

Professional photographers mentored underprivileged youth through an 8-week exploration of their world, using the safe aperture of a camera to help them gain a new perspective on themselves and their surroundings.

The children, aged 10–13, are students at Children First Leadership Academy and Boys and Girls Club Parson's Branch. All are considered “at-risk” and are living at or below poverty line. These young storytellers shifted from shy and apathetic to bold and engaged as they explored with their cameras and mentors on weekly field trips. The resulting images are a tribute to the restorative power of self-expression and will be on public display April 7–June 11.

Join us for this special opening gala and meet the wonderful students and their mentors, see their work and celebrate their achievements. It's an inspirational evening that you won't want to miss.

Sunday, April 2 | 1–3 p.m.

Do you have a young maker? Join us for CREATE Jr., a monthly program to introduce children aged 8–12 to the world of technology and engineering. Learn about 3D printing and how to use the equipment in CREATE. During the class, participants will create a Tinkercad account and learn how to create and combine shapes to design a 3D object.

Saturday, April 15 | 5–8 p.m.

Are you curious about microcontroller technology or are you an Arduino enthusiast? Come discuss the latest and greatest in the world of Arduino in this meetup that takes place every third Saturday of the month.

Do you have a Resource Center Pass at CREATE? If so, check out our live Equipment Reservations calendar to see when the equipment is available. Then make your reservation by calling us at 602.716.2073 or emailing us at

Arizona Science Center will provide immersive after school experiences introducing urban youth in grades 7—10 to concepts and tools for creative engineering and applied problem solving intended to help students create career awareness and contribute to career readiness. Through informal education and the support of school staff and community experts, students will receive mentoring and support to design activities and develop a plan to involve additional partners.

In the spring of 2017, we will be exploring “The Art of Sound.” We will explore what makes sound. How do we interpret sound? How can we make sound available to all audiences? How is sound a part of our everyday lives? Can music create works of art? Could you make the first 3D printed hybrid instrument? How can a laser cutter show sound waves?

Come explore, CREATE, and collaborate with Arizona Science Center’s CREATE U -- where art, engineering, and science collide!
