Malaysia perspective challenges in conservation and management challenges for sustainable forest

Sustainable Forest Management (SFM ) is a dynamic and evolving concept, that aims to maintain and enhance the economic, social and environmental values of all types of forest, for benefit of present and future generation. (United Nation, 2007)

According to SFM, these are challenges that need to solve by Malaysia in conserve and manage the sustainable forest :

  • Complexity of the tropical forest ecosystem
  • Land use and tenure policies
  • Need to conserve biodiversity, social and environmental values a part from economic viability
  • Low commercial timber productivity of natural tropical forest


Based on Rio Earth Summit 1992, there are severals challenges for curtain countries which are :

  • Contineud deforestation, forest degradation and biodiversity losses
  • Weak governance of forest sector
  • Increase level of poverty in forested areas
  • Increase land use competition and insecure resource tenure by local people
  • Inedequate information availability
