Saint Peter's University Crowned 2017 CIT Champions; Defeat Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 62-61
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The Saint Peter’s University Men’s Basketball Team are your 2017 CIT Champions.
Neptune, New Jersey native and All-MAAC Second Team Selection Trevis Wyche secured the championship for the Peacocks when he hit a free-throw 0.9 seconds left on the clock. Texas A&M Corpus Christi tied the game at 61 after Cole Martinez was fouled shooting beyond the arc. He would hit all three free-throws.
Saint Peter’s tossed the ball all the way down the court into Quadir Welton’s hands. The 2017 CIT Most Valuable Player secured the ball and called timeout. Welton finished with his 9th double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and securing 13 rebounds.
On the next inbound possession, MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, Chazz Patterson, passed the ball to a cutting Wyche right under the basket, who was fouled. Wyche hit the first, and intentionally missed the second free-throw. The Islanders would throw up a half-court heave to no avail.
Wyche and Welton were named to the 2017 CIT All-Tournament Team. Wyche finished with 11 points including a key three-pointer with 4:51 left to tie the game at 51. Cavon Baker scored 15 points for the Peacocks off the bench on six-of-nine shooting from the field.
The Peacocks become the first MAAC institution to win a National Postseason Tournament since the Siena Saints won the CBI back in 2014.

Quinnipiac Ranked Nationally in USA Today Sports Top 25 Coaches' Poll for First Time in Program History
EDISON, NJ – Quinnipiac University Women’s Basketball team ranked No. 23 overall in the final USA Today Sports Top 25 Coaches’ Poll of the 2016-17 season. It is the first time in program history that the Bobcats have been ranked nationally. Quinnipiac previously received votes in national polls in 2012-13 and 2014-15, but were never in the Top 25.
The Bobcats finished the season (29-7, 17-3 MAAC) and earned its first two NCAA Tournament wins in program history. Quinnipiac defeated nationally ranked opponents No. 25 Marquette University and No. 16 University of Miami in the First and Second Rounds of the NCAA Tournament en route to the Sweet 16.
The Bobcats are the second team from the MAAC to advance to the Sweet 16. Marist College was the first team to do so in the 2007 NCAA Tournament.
They were just the fourth No. 12 seed in NCAA Women’s Basketball Division I history to advance to the Sweet 16, joining BYU (2014), Kansas (2013), and San Francisco (1996). The Bobcats were also the fourth team in NCAA Division I women’s basketball history to knock off both a No. 4 and 5 seed en route to a Sweet 16 berth.
Quinnipiac was one of 13 programs across the nation to have won at least three-straight conference regular season titles. The Bobcats have recorded a mark of 54-6 (.900) in conference games in that three-year span (since 2014-15).
Quinnipiac finished first in the MAAC in scoring offense (68.4), scoring margin (+9.7), field goal percentage defense (36.9%), blocked shots per game (4.9), assists per game (16.2), steals per game (10.8), turnover margin (+4.94), and assist/turnover ratio (1.1).
Monmouth's Justin Robinson Named Lou Henson National Player of the Year
PHOENIX, AZ- Monmouth guard Justin Robinson was named the recipient of the 2017 Lou Henson Award, presented annually to the nation's top Division I mid-major player. He is the first Hawk to ever win the award after being named a finalist last season.
Robinson, who recently earned his second straight AP All-America honorable mention, has earned several postseason accolades, completing his senior season by leading the MAAC in scoring en route to a second straight Player of the Year and third consecutive First Team showing. He was named ECAC Player of the Year as well as All-District by both the NABC AND USBWA, and scored in double digits in 32 of 34 games as a senior. The 5’8” guard averaged 19.7 points per game as a senior and finished in the top-five at Monmouth in scoring, assists, steals, three pointers, field goals made, and minutes played as well as reaching the 2,000 point plateau in the NIT against Ole Miss. Only Robinson and Ron Kornegay have ever topped 2,000 points in a Monmouth uniform.
Robinson also was named a Lou Henson All-American as well as a Lute Olson All-American, given to the nation’s top players. Purdue’s Caleb Swanigan earned the 2017 Lute Olson Award. Robinson was the only MAAC player on either list.
Iona Announces Contract Extensions For Tim Cluess and Billi Godsey
NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Iona College is pleased to announce contract extensions for both its men’s and women’s basketball head coaches, Tim Cluess and Billi Godsey through the 2021-22 season.

Coach Cluess led the men’s basketball program to a second straight MAAC Championship in early March to earn a fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament in his seven years at the helm. The Gaels have earned a postseason appearance in all seven of his years as the program has put together an overall record of 162-78 (.675).
The Maroon & Gold has appeared in the MAAC championship game in six of the last seven seasons, claiming three titles along with three regular season crowns. Iona has won 20 or more games in eight straight seasons, including seven under coach Cluess. The stretch is both twice as long as Iona’s previous program record and the previous MAAC record for consecutive 20 win seasons.

Coach Godsey concluded her fourth season as leader of the women’s basketball program in 2016-17 and has amassed a record of 82-46 (.641). The Maroon & Gold advanced to the MAAC tournament semifinal round this season, a year after claiming the program’s first-ever MAAC Championship and NCAA Tournament berth in 2015-16.
Under Godsey’s tutelage, Iona has finished in the top half of the MAAC standings in every year. In 2013-14, the Gaels earned an 18-2 regular season conference mark to earn MAAC Regular Season Co-Champion honors. The 18 conference wins remains a school record.
“I am thankful to President Nyre, Rick Cole Jr. and the entire Iona College family for the continued opportunity to lead the women’s basketball program,” said Godsey. "After continued program growth this season following a MAAC Championship in 2016, my staff and I are committed to bringing the program to another NCAA Tournament.”
Combined, Cluess and Godsey have recorded 244 victories, four MAAC tournament and four MAAC regular season titles. Individually, the two are currently among the winningest coaches in the New York Metropolitan area.
NYCB Live's Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Unveiled; MAAC to Host LONG ISLAND HOOPS Tripleheader on January 27, 2018
LONG ISLAND (March 31, 2017) – NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Presented By New York Community Bank, was unveiled today in a ribbon cutting ceremony marking the highly-anticipated opening of the iconic venue. Originally opened in 1972, the Coliseum underwent a $165 million renovation and is primed to host world-class sports and entertainment beginning with a special performance by Long Island’s own Billy Joel on Wednesday, April 5.
Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Presented By New York Community Bank was developed by Forest City Ratner Companies and designed by award-winning architecture firms SHoP Architects and Gensler. On the exterior, SHoP Architects retained the strong massing of the arena while simultaneously transforming it with an intricate enclosure of 4,700 brushed aluminum fins. Each of the elements in this system varies slightly in profile and dimension to create a subtle flow that reflects the big skies of the flat Long Island landscape. The materiality of the design evokes the area's history as well—a reference to the Spirit of St. Louis, a single-seat plane flown by Charles Lindbergh, which departed at a nearby airfield for the first non-stop solo transatlantic flight in 1927.
Gensler’s design vision for the interior of the 416,000 square-foot-arena reimagined the event experience for guests, performers, and athletes alike while preserving the good “bones” of the building. Guest enhancements include a new exterior glass storefront to infuse natural light into the refreshed concourse, a redesigned main entrance, all new seating, improved bowl circulation, and revamped bathrooms and concessions. New amenity spaces for fans include an event level VIP Club and The Blue Moon Beer Garden. Behind the scenes, the venue’s Artist Quarters presented by Apollo Jets provides residential style living spaces for performers and talent management.
In addition to the design, the fan experience will also be enhanced with access to free high speed Wi-Fi, upgraded phone service for all major cellular carriers, and an enlarged high definition LED scoreboard.
Approximately 1,500 employees have been hired to work in the Coliseum, and have been trained by Disney Institute, the business advisory arm of The Walt Disney Company, to bring industry-best customer service to the venue.

Nick Hreshko continued his run of extraordinary play in goal for Monmouth as the Hawks won their third consecutive game on Saturday night at Marist. Monmouth’s dominating defensive performance in the 7-2 win helped the Hawks start 3-0 in the MAAC for the first time ever. The senior made 13 saves in the victory and recorded double-digit saves for the fifth straight game and sixth time overall this season. Hreshko also picked up one ground ball in the contest and has limited opponents to nine or less goals in five consecutive games. Monmouth is 5-1 when Hreshko makes at least 10 saves this season and the Hawks made history with their first win over Marist (previously 0-5). The two goals allowed marked a new program record and Monmouth held Marist’s J.D. Recor without a point for the first time in 38 games. Hreshko has been selected as the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week three times this season. Hreshko lowered his season goals-against average to 7.66, which leads the MAAC and ranks ninth in the NCAA. As a team, Monmouth’s scoring defense is seventh in the country (7.78).

DeVito made his first career start for the Bobcats after playing on only two of the first seven games and had his first three collegiate points. He finished with two goals and an assist, and had two points in the first two minutes of the game, scoring the game’s first goal just over a minute in and then assisting on the second goal 30 seconds later. He also added a goal in the third quarter after Manhattan closed to within 7-4 to help restore momentum as the Bobcats went on to the 12-6 win.

Canisius College junior Erica Evans had a season-high seven goals in an 18-5 victory over Iona College on Saturday. The midfielder added an assist, seven ground balls, seven caused turnovers, and four draw controls. Her seven caused turnovers marked a career high, while her seven ground balls tied a career-high. Evans would got the scoring going at 29:22, with a free position goal to put the Griffs up 1-0. Following a Gaels goal, Canisius would go on a 4-0 run that saw two goals from Evans for a 5-1 lead. Evans would add her fifth goal in an 8-0 run that gave the Griffs a 14-3 lead at halftime. The midfielder would add two goals in the second half en route to victory.

Fairfield University senior goalkeeper Caleigh O’Connor earned two wins and limited opponents to 12 goals over the two-game span. Her goals against average for the week was 7.58, O’Connor has the lowest goals against average in the MAAC this season (9.58).

Monmouth University attack Nicole Ceraso tallied a career-high five points (one goal, four assists) in the Hawks win over Marist College. The Massapequa, NY native assisted on the first goal of the game and the first two goals of the second half as Monmouth continued to build key leads over the Red Foxes. Ceraso is tied for first among all MAAC players in assists with 23 and was third among all freshmen in the NCAA heading into the weekend. She is currently tied for 12th most in school history for a single season.
Marist's Kelliher, Manhattan's Matazinsky & Quinnipiac's Long Take Home MAAC Softball Weekly Awards
Player of the Week
Jr., OF, East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick
Kelliher hit .389 (7-18) with two homers, six RBI, and scored seven runs. In the first game of a doubleheader at Binghamton on March 30, her two-run homer in the fifth inning gave Marist the lead for good in its 6-5 victory. She finished the game 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Kelliher went 1-4 with an RBI in Marist’s 7-4 win in game two. In the second game of a doubleheader against Siena on April 2, she went 2-3 with two runs scored in Marist’s 10-0 win. In a 4-2 victory over Cornell in the first game of a doubleheader on April 3, Kelliher went 1-2 with two runs scored, a stolen base, and a walk. In the second game, the junior hit a three-run homer in the team’s 3-1 win.
Pitcher of the Week

Matazinsky went 3-0 with a 0.39 ERA last week, allowing one run in 18.0 innings. She went six innings at Sacred Heart on Wednesday, scattering four hits and walking one while striking out seven in the 9-0 victory, which was the first of four straight shutouts tossed by Manhattan pitching. Matazinsky then threw a complete game one-hitter in an 8-0 win over Rider on Sunday. The lone hit she surrendered was an infield single in the first inning, as Rider sent only three batters over the minimum to the plate in six innings. Matazinsky recorded six strikeouts in the contest. She threw another six-inning complete game against Monmouth on Monday. Matazinsky gave up one run on six hits to go along with four walks and a strikeout in the 9-0 win. She collected 15 strikeouts over the course of the three games.
Rookie of the Week

Long went 3-0 during the week, with a 1.05 ERA with 16 strikeouts over 20.0 innings. Long tossed a three-hit, complete game effort in a 2-1 win over Hartford. Long went 6.0 innings in her start against Saint Peter’s, giving up two runs, with one walk, and five strikeouts. Long pitched a complete-game shutout with seven strikeouts against Rider on Sunday, April 3.

Murphy posted a first-place shot put mark of 18.48 meters (60’ 7.75”) at the Stockton Invite this past weekend. He is now seventh in the East and 19th in NCAA Division I with that throw so far this season. That mark not only qualifies him for ECAC competition, but also NCAA Regional qualification.

At Stanford on Friday, Johannes Motschmann placed ninth in the invite 3,000 meter steeplechase for the Gaels. The junior clocked in at 8:50.80 for the fastest time in the MAAC this season thus far by nearly 40 seconds. It was his first steeplechase race of the season.
Women’s Field Performer of the Week
Jr., Stamford, CT
Roones won the javelin at the Stockton Invite this past weekend, doing so with a toss of 47.76m (156’ 8”), a personal best as well as an NCAA Regional qualifying mark. Her throw ranks her 14th in the East this year and 31st in NCAA Division I.

Fresh off one of the single-greatest indoor seasons in program history, Jessica Lee showed no signs of rust as she rang in the outdoor season with yet another first place finish in the hurdles. Running in the 100m hurdles event, Lee bested her own program record with a time of 13.89 seconds to top the field of 56 competitors. After winning seven 60m hurdles titles in the 2016-17 indoor campaign, Lee opens the 2017 outdoor season with her eighth first place finish out of nine hurdle event appearances.
Iona's Schultz, Siena's Jackson-Clark, & VMI's Isabel French Are Weekly Winners

In four games for the Gaels this week, junior Hannah Schultz scored 12 goals on 28 shots in a 2-2 week. Iona fell to Wagner on Wednesday, where the junior posted four goals on ten shots. In Iona’s 13-3 victory over Siena on Saturday morning, junior Hannah Schultz scored three goals on seven shots .In a split with Villanova and VMI on Sunday, Schultz posted contests of five goals on six shots against the Wildcats and one goal on six shots in three quarters against VMI. She now leads the MAAC with 63 goals.
Carly Jackson-Clark, Siena College
Senior, 6'-0", San Rafael, CA
Senior goalie Carly Jackson-Clark was tremendous for Siena in Virginia this weekend. Jackson-Clark saved 21 shots in the Saints’ 2-0 shutout win over St. Francis Brooklyn, which was just the third shutout in program history. The senior also added 10 saves in a win over La Salle. She totaled 37 saves in three games of action, adding an assist and a steal as well, helping the Saints to a 2-1 weekend.
Isabel French, Virginia Military Institute
Freshman, 6'-0", Naperville, IL
In 12 quarters, freshman goalkeeper Isabel French had 44 saves, a 62.9% save percentage, and 3 steals, helping the team to a 3-1 record at home. Against La Salle, French played one quarter, registered five saves and allowed no goals. Versus St. Francis, she played three quarters and recorded eight saves. Against #17 Wagner, the freshman played four quarters and had 12 saves. In VMI's matchup aginst Iona, French played four quarters, and had 19 saves, which saves is second most for a single match in program history.
Wadner & Marist Remain Nationally Ranked in CWPA Women's Poll
EDISON, NJ - Wagner College and Marist College remain nationally ranked in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Women’s Poll that was released on Wednesday, March 30. Wagner ranks 17th in the nation while Marist sits in the 24th spot.
Wagner was selected 20th in the CWPA Preseason Poll and have been nationally ranked for 11 consecutive weeks. The Seahawks have picked up wins against the No. 20 Harvard University, No. 18 University of California – San Diego, No. 14 San Jose State University, and No. 22 California State University – Bakersfield.
Wagner’s offense has been led by junior utility Kimberly Watson and sophomore attack Erica Hardy. Watson leads the conference with 64 goals, ranks third in points with 82, third in goals per game with 2.67, and fourth in points per game averaging 3.42. Hardy is the league leader in assists (40) and points (94), she is also tied for third in the conference in goals with 54. Senior goalkeeper Emily Riddle ranks second in the conference in goals-against average with 7.15 and in total saves with 141. The Seahawks currently sit in first place in the league with a record of (15-4, 6-0 MAAC).
Marist was not selected in the top 25 of the Preseason Poll, however they did receive votes. The Red Foxes did not break into the Top 25 until the second week of the season when they were tied for 24th. Since then, they have remained in the Top 25. The highest ranking the Red Foxes have earned was 23rd in weeks three through eight. For the past three weeks Marist has been ranked 24th in the nation. The Red Foxes earned an 11-10 double overtime win against #22 California State University – Bakersfield.
The Red Foxes have been led by senior utility Amanda Amorosa. The 2016-17 Preseason Player of the Year ranks fourth in the conference in points (72), sixth in the conference in goals (38), and second in assists (34). Marist is in third place in the conference with a mark of (12-11, 4-1 MAAC).

Marist's Restrepo, Siena's Garrity Take Home Weekly Tennis Awards
Jr., 5-7, Miami, FL/UNC-Wilmington/ New Village High School
Marist College junior Javier Restrepo went a perfect 2-0 on the week in the Red Foxes lone match against Rider University. The win improved Marist’s record to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in MAAC play.
Playing from the first singles position, Restrepo didn’t drop a game. His first win was over Chris Popso, 6-0, 6-0. Restrepo then teamed up at the second doubles position with Gianlucca Massa to defeat Rider’s Matthew Begley and Chris Popso, 6-1.
Sr., 5-5, Medina, OH/Medina
Senior Ali Garrity helped push the Siena Women’s Tennis team into Siena College history. With its 7-0 sweep of Marist College they are 14-0 on the season and have tied the best start by any program in Siena history. Garrity and doubles partner Fukamachi won on court one, 6-1. She then took down the Red Foxes 6-2, 6-1 on court one in singles.
Monmouth's Ferriter, Quinnipiac's Sazhin Earn Weekly Golf Awards
So., 5-7, Ramsey, NJ/Bergen Catholic
Drake Ferriter recorded back-to-back rounds of 76 to finish the Coca-Cola Lafayette Invitational with 152, good for 22nd overall. The sophomore, who recorded 22 even holes and three birdies over the 36-hole event, helped the Monmouth University Hawks climb five spots on the team leaderboard en route to a sixth place finish, the highest result of the six total MAAC schools at the tournament. The second-year Hawk now has 15 rounds in the 70s this season.

Quinnipiac University freshman Alexandra Sazhin finished tied for fifth out of 59 golfers at the 2017 Seahawk Invitational hosted by Wagner College at Quail Valley Golf Course in Littlestown, Pennsylvania. Sazhin followed Sunday's score of 76 with a 77 for the final round to give her a 153 (+9) for the tournament. Sazhin was third in the field in total holes parred as she was even on 26 of the 36 holes for the tournament. Sazhin’s 153 was a career-best for the first-year Bobcat while her first-day 76 was the second-best round of the season.
Jacksonville Win's All Three Weekly Awards
1st Varsity 8
Jacksonville University competed in the Sunshine State Invitational in Sarasota, FL over the weekend among some of the best competition the state has to offer. The Varsity 8 Boat finished with a time of 6:51.7 in the 2,000 meter race. The boat was led by Coxswain: Claire McLenna and rowers 8: Meg Coyle 7: Sarah Goodman 6: Veronika Stasaityte 5: Yailene Herrera 4: Delaney Plunkett 3: Stacey Price 2: Nicole Martin 1: Victoria Tkacz and 1: Victoria Tkacz.

Jacksonville’s 2nd Varsity 8 Boat finished ahead of fellow MAAC team Stetson in the 2000 meter race with a time of 7:01.8. Emily Niermann was Coxswain for the boat and the rowers were, 8: Sara Miller 7: Yailene Herrera 6: Madison Boyer 5: Samatha Amadio 4: Jennifer Pavlik 3: Jessica Shipkowski 2: Tori West 1: Alex Pulliam.

Kaiser, Long Earn Student-Athlete of the Week Awards
Sr., 6-2, Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown
Senior outfielder Tyler Kaiser is hitting .300 this season for the Broncs with a team-high 17 RBIs. This past week, he hit .600 (9-for-15) for Rider in four games. Kaiser has registered six multi-hit games this spring and has recorded two or more RBIs in a game six times in 2017. Last time out, he had his first career four-hit game in a 10-8 come-from- behind win at Iona.
Fr., 5-9, Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire North High School
Freshman Abbey Long won her first two career MAAC starts for the Quinnipiac Softball team, including a seven-hit shutout in a close 2-0 win over Rider. She has won each of her last four starts to improve her record to 7-6 on the season. Long, a mathematics/secondary education major, earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in her first collegiate semester in the fall.
