Iona Announces Contract Extensions For Tim Cluess and Billi Godsey

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Iona College is pleased to announce contract extensions for both its men’s and women’s basketball head coaches, Tim Cluess and Billi Godsey through the 2021-22 season.

“The Iona community and Gael Nation are proud to have Coach Cluess and Coach Godsey remain the leaders of the Iona basketball programs," said President Joseph E. Nyre, Ph.D. "We are excited about the bright future ahead for the Gaels following another successful year."

"Tim and Billi continue to lead our two programs the right way and their success within the MAAC and the New York Metropolitan Area speak for themselves," said Vice President for Athletics Administration Rick Cole Jr. "Their commitment to Iona athletics' mission of building champions both on and off the court is remarkable. I’m excited to work with them both as they position Iona College and our student-athletes for success."

Coach Cluess led the men’s basketball program to a second straight MAAC Championship in early March to earn a fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament in his seven years at the helm. The Gaels have earned a postseason appearance in all seven of his years as the program has put together an overall record of 162-78 (.675).

The Maroon & Gold has appeared in the MAAC championship game in six of the last seven seasons, claiming three titles along with three regular season crowns. Iona has won 20 or more games in eight straight seasons, including seven under coach Cluess. The stretch is both twice as long as Iona’s previous program record and the previous MAAC record for consecutive 20 win seasons.

"I have to thank the Iona College community, especially our alumni, for their support of our program, the coaching staff, myself and my family," said Cluess. "Additionally, I am grateful for the support shown by President Nyre, Rick Cole Jr. and our entire administration. I am excited to continue to be a part of Gael Nation and look forward to continued success and growth for Iona College and Iona men’s basketball.”

Coach Godsey concluded her fourth season as leader of the women’s basketball program in 2016-17 and has amassed a record of 82-46 (.641). The Maroon & Gold advanced to the MAAC tournament semifinal round this season, a year after claiming the program’s first-ever MAAC Championship and NCAA Tournament berth in 2015-16.

Under Godsey’s tutelage, Iona has finished in the top half of the MAAC standings in every year. In 2013-14, the Gaels earned an 18-2 regular season conference mark to earn MAAC Regular Season Co-Champion honors. The 18 conference wins remains a school record.

“I am thankful to President Nyre, Rick Cole Jr. and the entire Iona College family for the continued opportunity to lead the women’s basketball program,” said Godsey. "After continued program growth this season following a MAAC Championship in 2016, my staff and I are committed to bringing the program to another NCAA Tournament.”

Combined, Cluess and Godsey have recorded 244 victories, four MAAC tournament and four MAAC regular season titles. Individually, the two are currently among the winningest coaches in the New York Metropolitan area.

NYCB Live's Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Unveiled; MAAC to Host LONG ISLAND HOOPS Tripleheader on January 27, 2018

LONG ISLAND (March 31, 2017) – NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Presented By New York Community Bank, was unveiled today in a ribbon cutting ceremony marking the highly-anticipated opening of the iconic venue. Originally opened in 1972, the Coliseum underwent a $165 million renovation and is primed to host world-class sports and entertainment beginning with a special performance by Long Island’s own Billy Joel on Wednesday, April 5.

Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Presented By New York Community Bank was developed by Forest City Ratner Companies and designed by award-winning architecture firms SHoP Architects and Gensler. On the exterior, SHoP Architects retained the strong massing of the arena while simultaneously transforming it with an intricate enclosure of 4,700 brushed aluminum fins. Each of the elements in this system varies slightly in profile and dimension to create a subtle flow that reflects the big skies of the flat Long Island landscape. The materiality of the design evokes the area's history as well—a reference to the Spirit of St. Louis, a single-seat plane flown by Charles Lindbergh, which departed at a nearby airfield for the first non-stop solo transatlantic flight in 1927.

Gensler’s design vision for the interior of the 416,000 square-foot-arena reimagined the event experience for guests, performers, and athletes alike while preserving the good “bones” of the building. Guest enhancements include a new exterior glass storefront to infuse natural light into the refreshed concourse, a redesigned main entrance, all new seating, improved bowl circulation, and revamped bathrooms and concessions. New amenity spaces for fans include an event level VIP Club and The Blue Moon Beer Garden. Behind the scenes, the venue’s Artist Quarters presented by Apollo Jets provides residential style living spaces for performers and talent management.

In addition to the design, the fan experience will also be enhanced with access to free high speed Wi-Fi, upgraded phone service for all major cellular carriers, and an enlarged high definition LED scoreboard.

Approximately 1,500 employees have been hired to work in the Coliseum, and have been trained by Disney Institute, the business advisory arm of The Walt Disney Company, to bring industry-best customer service to the venue.

Through its Long Island Taste program, the Coliseum will offer authentic food and beverages from local restaurants and vendors. The program is modeled after Brooklyn Taste of Barclays Center, and overseen by Levy Restaurants.

The Coliseum will be home to the Brooklyn Nets’ NBA Development League affiliate, the Long Island Nets, and will also host a variety of events including concerts, family shows, sports and outdoor festivals. Billy Joel’s grand opening performance will be followed by world-renowned performers such as Stevie Nicks (April 6), Marc Anthony (April 9), Barbara Streisand (May 4), Metallica (May 17), The Weeknd (June 3), and Bruno Mars (Oct. 5). Other major events include the final run of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus (beginning May 12), Professional Bull Riding (Sept. 23-24), and a wide-range of other shows and events. For a full listing of upcoming shows please visit: www.NYCBLIVE.com.

“My administration is proud to have partnered with Nassau Events Center to jumpstart previous efforts to transform the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum into a world-class venue,” said Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano. “Together, we delivered a modern venue – at no cost to taxpayers - that makes all Long Islanders proud. From star-studded headliners to sporting events and the availability of local food options from some of your favorite local restaurants, the new Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Presented By New York Community Bank is sure to impress and will return a minimum $4.4 million to taxpayers every year.”

“Our goal was to create a space that reflected the tremendous sense of place that permeates Long Island, from the look of the building, to the taste of the food,” said Bruce Ratner, Executive Chairman of Forest City Ratner Companies, the developer of the new venue. “Our talented architectural and development team have succeeded beyond our dreams, creating a venue that is visually striking and wonderfully comfortable. We’re excited about the opening and are looking forward to the ongoing development of this entertainment destination.”

“NYCB LIVE’s Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum is defined by its modernized finishes, great programming, delicious local food, and first-class customer experience,” said Dmitry Razumov, Chairman of BSE and CEO of Onexim Group, the primary owner of Nassau Events Center. “This venue is more than just an arena, it is a place where everything is happening and everyone is welcome. To all of our guests, both old and new, welcome home.”

“I am beyond proud to say we have collectively succeeded in delivering to Long Island the venue it has long deserved,” said Brett Yormark, CEO of Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment. “We have replicated the best aspects of Barclays Center, like its renowned customer service and culinary program, and infused it with the spirit of Long Island. The combination has yielded a premier venue with a first-class experience that will become a vital part of the fabric of the community.”

“We believe that NYCB Live, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, will not only become a regional destination, but also serve as a place of pride for all Long Islanders,” said Andrew Kaplan, Executive Vice President of New York Community Bank. “Our marquee partnership with this extraordinary venue will make Long Island an even greater place to live, work and play, while preserving the worthy recognition of those who served our country and made the ultimate sacrifice.”

A formal dedication of the venue’s new memorial will be held on April 8 to honor those who have served our country from Long Island and beyond. Veterans from all branches of the armed forces will attend the event. The memorial, a dark granite oval on the southeast corner of the plaza, features water flowing along its surface, with a monument emerging at the center where National Grid will honor the veterans with an eternal flame.

In addition to New York Community Bank, the Coliseum’s Marquee Partner, its Founding Partners are Tri-State Ford, JetBlue, LIU Post, and Ticketmaster. Other supporting partners include: Apollo Jets, First Data, GEICO, Hospital for Special Surgery, Manhattan Beer Distributors, Mohegan Sun, National Grid, Palm Bay International Wine, P.C. Richard & Son, PepsiCo, Petro, and Stolichnaya.

"It was remarkable to drive by every day and watch the renovation done to this building,” said Norma Gonsalves, Presiding Officer, Nassau County Legislature. “I'm proud of the union labor who worked tirelessly, year-round, to turn this building into the wondrous facility it is today. This is just the first step in revitalizing this complex, and the new Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Presented By New York Community Bank, along with the Memorial Sloan Kettering center, will provide jobs and generate revenue. I can't wait for the exciting slate of shows that have already been lined up, and I am looking forward to generations of Nassau County residents enjoying this building for years to come."

“I’m happy for our residents to have the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum back open,” said Kevan Abrahams, Democratic Minority Leader & Nassau County Legislator District 1. “The Coliseum is an important institution on Long Island and a testimony to the all-union workforce that built it in the memory of the local veterans it remembers in its name. This project preserved more than a thousand union jobs and was in line with Forest City’s goal to hire local Uniondale community members. We are looking forward to the many wonderful events that will both showcase and enhance Nassau and Uniondale's spirited and vibrant community for years to come.”

“Opening the newly renovated Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Presented By New York Community Bank is truly an important moment in the history of America’s largest township,” said Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony J. Santino. “The revitalized Coliseum is the first step toward transforming this vital property in the heart of the Town of Hempstead into a world class entertainment destination and an economic engine, which will benefit residents for generations to come.”

“The Building and Construction Trades Council of Nassau and Suffolk Counties is delighted to have been involved in one of the most important economic development projects on Long Island and to have had hundreds of our members employed on site,” said Richard O’Kane, President, Building & Construction Trades Council of Nassau & Suffolk Counties. “We are looking forward to working with Forest City Ratner in the future.”

“The opening of the new Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Presented By New York Community Bank is a transformational development in Long Island’s history and we commend Forest City Ratner Companies, Nassau Events Center, and Nassau County for their efforts to create a first-class arena and destination center for the region,” said Kevin S. Law, President & CEO of the Long Island Association.

“Forty-five years ago, this building was named for and dedicated to American veterans,” said Frank Colon, a veteran of the United States Army. “On behalf of those who have answered the call of their country, we thank you for rededicating the new Coliseum to those brave men and women who served. With this new arena, we will never forget them and we thank you for honoring their devotion and their sacrifice.”
