FIELD HOCKEY Newsletter May 2018

Dear Loyal Buckeye Friends & Family,

Time for another newsletter to catch you up on what the Buckeyes have been up to this spring! Thank you for all of your amazing support this past year. Looking forward to some warm weather to take us through the summer and into preseason.

Go Bucks!

On the road – Spring 2018

Ohio State Field Hockey started off their spring competitions on March 24 against Indiana on the Buckeye Varsity Field. A few weeks later the team made the trip out to State College to play Penn State and Bucknell.

Both teams successfully got out of their escape rooms… one team a bit quicker than the other!

The following weekend the Buckeyes went to TTUN for a play day to face Michigan State and Iowa. To finish off the spring, Ohio State hosted the Ohio Cup featuring all Division 1 field hockey teams in the state of Ohio.

Spring Alumnae weekend was April 14th –15th. It was a great weekend with alumnae spanning from those who will graduate this May to a member of the very first Ohio State field hockey team in 1971. Thank you to all of the Buckeyes who came back to get some time on the turf. It was fun to share stories and hear each person’s favorite memory at this wonderful university that we all cherish! We loved meeting and reuniting with our Buckeye family and hope to see you back in the fall!

Buckeyes give back

The team was busy this spring connecting with the Columbus community including the MLK Day of Service, Women in Sports Day, the Buckeye Blanket Bash and Soles4Souls.

The team helped out at a local senior citizen home during the MLK Day of Service.
The Buckeyes share their experiences and let the youth community (and Brutus) try out their sport.

The complete Student-Athlete Experience

Off the field, the Buckeyes continue to excel in several areas. Hannah Pany (Nutrition) and Ellen Westfall (Sustainability) were selected as part of this year’s Bucks Go Pro class. Both will have internships this summer on campus.

This past December, rising senior, Courtney Daniels, was selected to participate in a Soles4Souls service trip within the Athletic Department.

“Because of the generosity of the Ohio State Athletic Department, and the guidance from Soles4Souls, I was able to travel with eleven other student-athletes on the experience of a lifetime in the Dominican Republic. Soles4Souls is a non-profit organization that distributes shoes and clothing to less fortunate communities worldwide, but they are so much more than that. Together we brought smiles, laughs, lots of hugs and shoes to five different communities over the span of four days. The people there were all so gracious and grateful, even the older kids as they watched the younger kids get the more stylish kicks. The best part of the trip was being a part of their world for just a little while. The children loved to run up from behind us and hold our hands and they never missed an opportunity to smile at the cameras. We played ball with them, sang songs with them and just enjoyed being together. We all soon forgot the very early morning wake up calls and the gallons of sweat throughout each day, but we will never forget those grateful smiles, and the genuine hugs we received.”

– Courtney Daniels

The team also participated in many team building activities this spring from a self-defense class to team jeopardy on the road – the Buckeyes stayed busy!

The team participated in a cooking class this spring. The two groups chose a menu, went shopping with our nutrition staff and then received some pointers from a local chef who helped them prepare their meals!
Nothing like a morning ride at a cycle class to get your heart rate up!
The team learned some self-defense skills from a few local police officers.
First year letter winners received their Varsity O Jackets.
Jennica Jonovich, Mara Hunter, Esther Clotet, Juliette Duquesne and Nikki Trzaska spend spring break together at Disney World!
Local Columbus family hosts an egg decorating party for those who stayed in town.
