GENERAL BACKGROUND ON THE BIOLOGY OF TYPE 1 DIABETES:

•Caused when no insulin is produced

•Insulin moves the sugar from the blood in cells, with no sugar in cells, it starves

•Most commonly a childhood disease, however it can happen in adults

•The immune system sees the insulin producing cells (islets) as foreign and destroys them (which can lead to the destruction of the pancreas) so it is an auto immune disease

•Many complications can occur with diabetes like loss of limbs and eyesight so it is important to take care of yourself!

DIETARY GUIDELINES OF TYPE 1 DIABETES:

It is important to eat a good healthy diet with type 1 Diabetes. That does not mean you can’t eat tasty foods, there is just a limit on the amount. With type 1 Diabetes, your body stops producing insulin. So you take insulin every day either through a shot or pump. Insulin is not the only part, to keep a good blood sugar level, diet and exercise is very important also.

Some general guidelines:

•Eat enough fiber (25-30 g/day)

•Eat less unhealthy fats

•Count your daily carbs (180g/day and 45-60g/meal)

•Eat enough for your BMI

*Use the ratio 2:1:1 (carbs:fat:protein)

MONITORING BLOOD SUGAR DAILY INCLUDING A1C

Monitoring blood sugar of type 1 diabetes depends on your age and health. It can also depend on a health care provider’s idea of care and which set of diabetes care guidelines they follow. before a meal, the average blood sugar level is 90 to 130 mg/dl for an adult. After, it is usually less than 180 mg/dl. Most people take a fasting reading before breakfast every morning. Some people also monitor before lunch, dinner, and bed. Some monitor after each meal, and some monitor before and after their meals. Self monitoring is an important part of diabetes management because it puts you in charge. Unlike daily blood glucose test results, which are reported as mg/dL, A1C is reported as a percentage. This can make it hard to understand the relationship between the two. For example, if you check blood glucose 100 times in a month, and your average result is 190 mg/dL this would lead to an A1C of approximately 8.2%, which is above the target recommended by the American Diabetes Association.

LIFESTYLE AND EXERCISE INFORMATION

>EXERCISE

•Have a conversation about exercise with your doctor

•Keep a diary of your exercises

•Know what all your levels should be before and after you exercise (blood sugar etc.)

•Drink plenty of water

•Wear a medical identification bracelet and have a snack and a glucose tablet. (Exercise lowers blood glucose levels so you need something sugary!)

>LIFESTYLE

The lifestyle of a new diabetic changes dramatically when they are diagnosed. They have a whole new set of things they need to be cautious of and be aware of. They need to know what their levels of blood sugar, glucose, and insulin. If one of these things become unbalanced, it can cause loss of limbs, nerve and kidney problems, eyesight loss, and more.
