Summary | In the Parable of the Ten Virgins Jesus exhorts His disciples to be prepared for His Second Coming.

Here are three observations.

UNEXPECTED RETURN. No one knows when Jesus will return. In Matt 24 the disciples asked for information regarding the end of the age. Jesus told the parable to emphasise that rather than knowing when the last days would be, they should be more concerned with keeping watch and being ready. When Jesus comes again, there will be no more time to set our lives in order. He will reward the righteous and punish the wicked.

Will I be ready?

UNPREPARED BRIDESMAIDS. All the bridesmaids knew the Groom and were invited to the wedding and the only difference was that some were wise and prepared and some foolish and unprepared. Their role was to be ready to greet the Groom and provide light for this special occasion. However, his arrival was delayed and eventually the unpre-pared were unable to fulfil their essential responsibilities. Some of us are like this - spiritually apathetic. We don’t pursue a relationship with our Lord and we only go through the motions. The devil knows that by inducing us to complacency and apathy, many will miss the opportunity to enter the Kingdom of God. We cannot borrow the es-sential tenements of our faith - a personal relationship, the power of the Holy Spirit, transforming faith, obedience and a heart that loves our Lord and our neighbours.

Will Jesus recognise me? Matt 7:21-23

UNDISTRACTED BRIDESMAIDS. There is a story told of a lighthouse keeper who kindly gave away his oil to the local residents. However, he himself ran out of oil and sever-al ships were wrecked. He failed in his essential duty to keep the light burning. We need to keep our eyes on Christ, know Him through service and identify and eliminate the distractions in our lives.

Do I truly desire to live out my faith undistracted and focused?

Let us commit to do what He has called us to do and be prepared for His return.

PONDER | REFLECTION QUESTIONS

1. Jesus’ return will be unexpected. How do we respond to uncertainty in our lives?

2. Why did Jesus call five of the bridesmaids foolish?

3. Why is it so important that we understand Jesus’ warning to keep watch?

4. Have you struggled with apathy in your spiritual walk? How did you overcome it?

5. To keep watch is to remain focus. What is one distraction in your life that takes your focus away from your relationship with God?

6. How can we encourage each other in our faith community to keep watch over our spiritual walk with God?
