For those not at home this Advent we pray

for the displaced and exiled,

According to figures released by the United Nations in 2016, over 65 million people have been globally displaced. Wars and persecution have driven more people from their homes than at any time since UNHCR records began.

Twenty-four people are displaced every minute and one in every 113 people on the planet is now either an asylum-seeker, internally displaced or a refugee.

Every one of these figures is a human story.

Men and boys can find themselves neglected or dismissed during times of displacement. Many face threats to their life and liberty, and are often most directly affected by armed conflicts.

At home, they risk forced recruitment into armies and militias, and can be threatened with detention and exploitation. In exile, life is no easier, and what self-esteem they have left may suffer as gender roles change and households become recipients of international assistance.

In some societies, women and girls face discrimination and violence every day, simply because of their gender. An ordinary task like collecting water or going to the toilet can put them at risk of rape or abuse.

In times of displacement, this problem escalates. Women and girls make up around 50 per cent of any refugee, internally displaced or stateless population, and those who are unaccompanied, pregnant, heads of households, disabled or elderly are especially vulnerable.

Ten of the nation’s biggest lenders including JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Bank of America Corp. together made $30 billion last quarter, just a few hundred million short of the record in the second quarter of 2007, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The achievement comes just as the industry’s long campaign against post-crisis rules finds traction with the Trump administration.

Human activities contaminate ecosystems around the world—from pole to pole, from the highest mountains to the ocean deep. Toxic chemicals can be found in pristine forests and the blood of Arctic animals. Litter floats beneath the surface of oceans miles away from land. Even excess noise and light are interrupting natural patterns and disrupting the lives of animals and people.
