Art Around Town Our connection with the Barnes foundation and moOre college of art

The museum experience provides the foundation for creativity, critical thinking and connection to the world. Furthermore, it gives students a chance to connect, understand and explore perceptions, feelings and innovative thoughts.

The Challenge: Very few of our of Visual Arts majors have been to local museums or see it as something accessible to them.

Action Plan: To create relationships with museums and galleries nearby where we can take multiple visits. This will allow students to see a variety of genres while making the museum experience something enriching, fun and familiar.

The Barnes Foundation : Our First Partnership

Our Timeline:

What the students got: Guided tours of both the Permanent Collection and Special Exhibitons.

Knolling: The Modern Technology Spin on the Ensemble

The Special Exhibition: Picasso Between the Wars

The iBook

I am proud to say that our Barnes Partnership continues to grow; allowing students more museum visits. The Education Department is supportive of the classwork that comes from our experiences. They worked diligently steering us through the vetting process to allow for pulication of our book on the iTunes Store. All student work is shared back to Barnes in the hopes that other educators may learn from our experience.

Our Second Partnership: Moore College of Art and Design

Our partnership with Moore Is much less formal but equally as fruitful. It began last spring with conversations with both Admissions and the Galleries at Moore. Both asking:

What can we do for you and your students?

This year has started with admissions counselors visitng the classroom and my students visiting the Galleries. Through our relationship with Matt Kalasky. at the gallery, we were invited to participate in Art Crush.

The Art Crush Audio Tour is a community generated self-guided audio tour to the 2016 Faculty Triennial. The goal of this project is to illuminate a wide range of viewer responses and celebrate our personal connections to works of art.

Student groups were invited to participate in writing workshops at The Galleries at Moore. Through exercises that encouraged a wide range of unexpected responses, participants generated a personal vocabulary for the art on display. For example, draw this painting as a super hero or make up a dance move for this sculpture. The workshops culminated with participants writing and recording a personal “love letter” to a specific piece of art. The Art Crush Audio Tour is a compilation of theses individual recordings.

The Writing:

Jenna DiStefano
Destiny DiMarco

Next Up: RAIR Exhibit • a tour with the gallery director and a visit from Chad States.

In closing our students are eager to get out and about, to learn and be part of the arts community. We all look forward to our continued collaboration with our community partners in the arts.
