XXXIsland (Lord of the flies)

Thursday, April 6th, 2k17

What dangers do you see as a person stranded on this deserted island?

On the island the boys have been stranded on, there are many dangers. If i was stranded I would be worried about food and water sources, in the book it explains how it has fruit and pigs so there's a food source but the are most likely drinking contaminated water. The boys haven't boiled it to get out the germs making it possible to become very sick. Another is that any where you go there is going to be predator and prey, depending if its higher on the food chain or not. Not counting the fact that sickness can kill and on an island that has no medical resources is dangerous.

Rules:

~Travel in 2+

~Don't go out at night

~Share resources

~Clean up after yourself

~communicate effectively

~do your job

~Do not kill each other

The rule that I would want to be followed the most if I was put in that situation would be communication. All of the rules would be easier to follow if this was enforced. Communication is connected to all of the rules

Is this a good island, how do they survive?

Wednesday, April 12th, 2k17

For survival you are going to usually be in a place where you're not getting everyday resources so since the boys are on an inhabited island they only have the fruit which is easy to obtain because you have to boil water for it to be safe and catch the pigs.

Tuesday, April 25th, 2k17

Ralph has said, “This is a good island” (Golding 35). Ralph’s pronouncement will prove ironic; it is definitely NOT a good island. This is an example of foreshadowing. What problems do readers already know about? Explain why these problems prove this is NOT a good island after all.

A problem with the island is that it's not inhabited by people making it difficult to get to where they need to be. The boys were also having trouble with getting meat but when they did they might have missed out on a chance to go ''home''.

Symbolism

Wednesday, April 27th, 2k17

Symbols are physical things that represent abstract ideas. The following are some of the symbols from the novel The Lord of the Flies.

~Meat symbolizes the temptation the boys face on the island.

~The conch symbolizes law and order of there meetings.

~The island symbolizes the isolation of not being with adults or other people.

~Smoke symbolizes a rescue, how the people would be able to spot them.

~There painted faces symbolize anonymity because when they paint there faces there doing something they usually wouldn't if they were at home.

~Simon symbolizes goodness by giving his food to piggy and being selfless.

~Piggy symbolizes civilization by trying to keep the boys in check.

~The platform symbolizes democracy because that's where there meetings are held.

~Piggy's glasses symbolize survival by them breaking when jack hit his head.

How are the boys acting on instinct and is the beast real?

Friday, April 28th, 2k17

Describe the Beast that seems to be stalking the island. Use the text as backup for your info.

The beast seems to be described as a snake like thing, that comes out in the dark, and comes from the ocean but only the younger children have seen it. There is the possibility of it being one of the boys walking around because Simon admitted to being out at night in his spot. It would be possible because even if Ralph thinks only pigs live on the island there could be something not necessarily a big snake that stays in the water and comes and scares kids but there could be something.

Monday, May 1st, 2k17

Name at least two things the boys are doing or have given up that show how they are now operating on instinct and no longer trying to follow the rules of society. Explain your answers with information from the text.

The boys have given up the rule that they are supposed to talk with the conch. Ralph tries to keep enforcing this rule but people aren't listening. ''' We don't need the conch anymore. We know who ought to say things. Its time some people knew they've got to keep quiet and leave deciding things to the rest of us'''(Golding 101-102). In that Jack doesn't want other peoples opinions except the ones he see's fit.

Jack has been doing what he wants without caring what the other's think. He has been going against Ralph ''the chief, leader'' who the're supposed to listen to. When Ralph gets angry with Jack, Jack blows it off or tries to argue about the topic. He is not listening to there rule about listening to the chief.

Rituals and effect after seeing the beast.

Thursday, May 4th, 2k17

Two rituals people are most familiar with are weddings and funerals. Pick an event (a wedding or a funeral). Make a list of at least 3 phrases people use at the event you picked. Using one of your phrases, explain why your phrase is helpful in the situation.

In weddings you commonly here the three things that are listed below. ''You may kiss the bride'' is a way for the husband and wife to seal in their promise of marriage. ''I do'' is how the spouses agree to questions the priest or pastor ask. Lastly ''I would like to make a toast'' is usually said either for the husband and wife or they make a toast to each other. In our book Lord of the Flies we find out that the boys are wanting to kill a pig, or have an offering. Our common day rituals aren't really about killing but they symbolize or make meaning. Almost all weddings now a day end with ''Now you may kiss the bride'' or something like it.

''You may kiss the bride.''

''I do.''

''I would like to make a toast''

Choose a character, either Ralph or Jack and explain the effect seeing the Beast has on the character you have chosen. Use textual information to support your answer.

Jack:

When Ralph, Jack and Roger are on the mountain the boys are one upping each other '''If you don't want to go on,' said the voice sarcastically, 'I'll go up by myself'''(Golding 120). Since Jack goes by himself he thinks Ralph's being scared. After Jack has been on the mountain he was afraid ''Then Jack found them, and was shivering and croaking in a voice they could just recognize as his. 'I saw a thing on top''' (Golding 121). Jack seems as frightened as the little ones who talked about it before that he would get angry with. When Jack calls the meeting down at the platform he asks the boys three times who wants Ralph to no longer be chief yet both boys ran away from the beast. While doing this he decides to make Ralph to look as bad as possible by twisting his words and saying he only demands things and expects others to do them. After Jack storms off many of the older boys go with and he decides to not acknowledge the beast yet leave offerings/sacrifices for it hoping it would leave them alone, that the food will be enough for it.

What happened to Simon and what needs do groups fill for people?

Wednesday, May 10th, 2k17

Retell in your own words what has happened to Simon. Use textual evidence to help you create a vivid paragraph.

Every one on the island got riled up in the moment when they killed Simon. The boys were doing there dance in a circle when a littlun said '''Him! Him'''(Golding 152)! The boys' circle opened up to look at this ''beast'' coming out of the forest which is Simon and lets him in the circle. They enclose Simon and beat him like he is this beast everyone has imagined in there head. ''The sticks fell and the mouth of the new circle crunched and screamed''(Golding 152). If you look at it from Simon's point of view he's just coming out of the forest to tell the group that the beast wasn't a beast at all in fact that it was just a body with a parachute. He came to them and was randomly beat with sticks piercing him and his flesh being torn. That's when the goodness was gone because Simon symbolized goodness and was a Christ-like figure.

In life people create groups. These groups might be at school, in sports, in extracurricular activities, and through religious organizations. Explain what needs groups fill for people. Explain both the positive and negative aspects of being part of a group. You may relate this to our novel, or you may make it a personal reflection of your own experience.

In groups you usually feel accepted. In the book Lord of the Flies they start out as one group. Ralph blows the conch and they vote on him being the chief. They assign roles to help them maintain a society like group to help them get things done. In groups you usually have groups inside of the group like how there are the older children and the younger children then there are hunters and the sensible ones like Simon, Piggy and Ralph. Sometimes as proven by Jack people aren't happy with where they are in the group because Jack gets mad and jealous of Ralph being chief. He chooses to make his own group and if a group is not lead right it could turn out awful as it did with Jack. Jack had made himself in such a way that the boys needed to treat him like a king so that nothing bad would happen to them. He ruled with fear.

Should it be rules and agreement or hunting and murder?

Friday, May 12th, 2k17

“Which is better - to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?”

Using this quote, take a stand. Pick a side and explain why your decision is best on this island here at the end of Chapter 11. Don’t forget to use textual evidence to support your answer.

Having rules and agreeing is better than hunting and killing people. If you have rules and a more society type of group its gonna be handled better. Murder is not alright and if your killing people and you're starting to believe that that's okay it's going to happen more and more often. Things should flow more smoothly with rules, if you're agreeing with everyone you shouldn't have many problems. Jack didn't want to agree with Ralph and had turned all there hard work around they started stealing and beating each other. Jack would soon beat kids at random and he said that he killed Piggy on purpose. Having rules and order is better because it's safer to them and keeps the boys on track of what they need. '''If I blow the conch and they don't come back;then we've had it. We shan't keep the fire going. We'll be like animals. We'll never be rescued'''(Golding 92).

Explaining why I chose this picture.

Monday, May 16th, 2k17

Today’s assignment requires you to think about the book as a whole. Your directions are to choose a picture and a quote from the book and add it to your blog.

For the text (7-9 sentences), explain why you chose the picture and the caption to summarize your experience with the book.

I chose the boat because this book is about these boys wrecking on an island and that's what saves them from all that has happened. The Lord of the Flies has these boys trying to survive until hopefully they get rescued. They had choose chief, decided on hunters, built shelters and tried to keep level heads so they had a plan on how to be rescued which was the smoke. The boys had the fire on the mountain to help it not take over the island. When in the end Ralph was running away from the fire that was consuming the entire island he was worried about the fruit and what he was going to eat luckily Ralph didn't have to worry about that. The smoke symbolized rescue and thanks to the boys trying to kill him when they were trying to smoke him out they were saved. '''We saw your smoke. What have you been doing? Having a war or something'''(Golding 201)?

What I thought about the novel.

Friday, May 19th, 2k17

What did you think about the novel?

Explain how you best enjoyed the novel: the British man, reading on your own, or me reading.

The Adobe Spark Blog

Any additional information you would like to include

The novel is something that I would recommend if someone asked about it. I enjoyed the book best when it was read by you because it could get a little boring and the British man had a relaxing voice so you would feel tired. I liked going outside to read it was better than being stuck in the same desks and room all year so just being outside to read was nice. The ending was not how I would have thought it out to be which is fine because I'm not the one writing the book. Somethings i wished didn't happen like Simon and Piggy death but they served a purpose for it to play out like it did. The blog was enjoyable because it made me look at things differently than I did when it was being read. The questions were sometimes either about the events in the novel or it was related, the related questions had me thinking more. The question where you had to explain what kind of needs groups fill it made me realize that there is this difference between maybe a church group and the boys but what do they have in common other than there both groups.
