A historic decision has officially cleared the path for Minnesota’s largest private university – the University of St. Thomas – to become the first program in the NCAA’s modern era to reclassify directly from Division III to Division I college athletics.

At its meetings on Wednesday, July 15, the NCAA’s Division I Council approved a motion granting St. Thomas the ability to make the unprecedented jump. With the decision, the Tommies officially accepted invitations to join the Summit League athletics league, as well as the Pioneer Football League, Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) women's league, and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) for men's hockey.

St. Thomas will compete in the Summit League, a strong midwest conference headquartered in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Tommies will compete in 19 of its 22 varsity sports, including baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, as well as volleyball.
