BookSnaps

We're hearing about "Booksnaps" around Hilliard these days. Book snaps are a way for students to make their thinking visible by posting comments, images, text and highlights, etc. over an image of a page or pages in a book. They can infer, clarify, make connections, wonder, and predict. Using digital tools makes it fun and easy to display all the aspects of their thinking. Below is a post from a teacher whose students use Pic Collage to make their snaps. Our students can use use Slides, Keynote, or Explain Everything, as well. Within the article is a link to Tara Martin's post, the guru of Book snaps. Ideas...yea! Ask us about helping your students try book snaps.

Kindergarteners reading and predicting with the "POst it PLus" App

I shared the Post it Plus app with some teams and many of you have used this tool in class or in meetings. Below is a post from a teacher whose kindergarteners made predictions on sticky notes of what they expected to encounter in a book about going to the vet. The teacher air dropped the virtual note board to the kids. After the story, the students sorted the notes into those predictions that were confirmed in the story and those that weren't. Great way to teach prediction. Post it Plus is in the App Portal. More ideas...yes! Ask us about other ways your can use Post it Plus boards to get kids sorting, organizing, and clarifying their thinking.

february is Digital Wellness Month in Hilliard schools

Hilliard City Schools is devoting the month of February to Digital Wellness. On January 31st, our district will offer a screening of the documentary, "Screenagers", about children growing up in the digital age. Save the date. The film is open to families, school staff and community members. Look for more information and resources to promote good digital habits and balance through the next several weeks.

"Screenagers" viewing at Davidson High School, January 31, 2018, 7:00 PM

Our students will be global digital citizens and global digital leaders. We have a unique opportunity, by being One2One, to help them build good habits and practice good decision making. There are risks and benefits to participating in an evolving digital community. As with most things in life, balance, discipline and awareness keep us healthier and happier. Our technology team wants to take a lead role in educating our Hilliard community about digital wellness. We're organizing our efforts around 4 themes:

  • Wellness: How we keep balance and ensure our digital activity is healthy
  • Citizenship: How we interact responsibly in global online communities
  • Etiquette: How we respect our fellow global digital citizens.
  • Safety: How we protect ourselves and speak up when we encounter potentially dangerous activity online.

We're including digital wellness in our common language talks, this month, and are responding to feedback from grade level teams about what your students need to learn and understand. We hope to continue these discussions and explorations throughout the school year.
