Greatness through Service Our Savior Hawaii Online Sunday School

Welcome

Welcome to Our Savior Hawaii's Online Sunday School! In life, we often want to be great. We shout, "We're #1! We're #1!" In our lesson today, we'll see that God sees greatness differently. To be great is to serve one another. Jesus came to serve us. We can follow His example and serve and help one another.

Scripture

Mark 9:33-37 Jesus and the disciples came to Capernaum. When Jesus was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?” But the disciples were silent, because on the way they had been arguing with one another about who was the greatest. Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last and servant of all.” He took a child, had him stand among them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever welcomes one little child such as this in my name welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me does not welcome me, but him who sent me.”

Talk
The disciples wanted to fight over who was the best. Do you have to be the best at something to be great? Jesus turned the world upside down for the disciples—first is last and last is first. What does that mean? Talk about a time someone served you. What did they do for you? What did it feel like?
Engage

Go and serve! Think of a way you can be helpful, caring, and kind. Following Jesus' example, complete acts of service. Check out the list below if you need help thinking of an idea:

  • Let someone at school go ahead of you in line.
  • Help an adult with a chore around the house.
  • Write a note or draw a picture to encourage someone.
  • The next time you're at the store, buy some extra food and donate to a food pantry.
  • The next time you're shopping, bring in someone's cart from the parking lot. (Make sure a trusted adult is close by.)
  • Call a grandparent to say, "I love you!"
  • Play the game your sibling or friend wants to play instead of your first choice.
  • Make a thank you note for an essential worker.
  • Give your teacher a compliment at school.
Pray + Bless

Pray: Dear Jesus, You are great! Thank you for helping us to think about things in a new way. Enable us to love and care for others as you do. Your death and resurrection show us true service and greatness. Amen.

Make the sign of the cross on the forehead of each person in your family and say, "Serve the Lord with gladness."
