Civil War Prision Camps By: Abby and Sydney

Prision camps were when you got captured you went to one of these camps. Going here would often result in death. These were also where soldiers were held while the Civil War was happening.
Life in the Camps/// The prison camps were poorly managed, horrendously overcrowded, and deliberately cruel. In April 1864, there was a widespread illness that crossed the camps to the North. The sickest prisoners were killed. You were either killed or sent to a prison camp. These confederate camps were worse than anti slave camps.
Location/// Some main camps were held in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, New York, Delaware, Belle Isle, Virginia, North Carolina, Texas, Georgia, and Maryland. Prison camps were way more dangerous and terrifying then the battle itself. About 56,000 men died in these prison camps, that's 10% of the wars death poll.
Impact/// The prison camps were terrible and after seeing photos, northerners were shocked because they looked like skeletons. As war progressed, the situation became more complicated and refused to acknowledge the black soldiers. At the end of camp, the prisoners often ended in death or bad illnesses and were sent to a place called Deadland.
Rodger Baldwin/// He was born 1884-1981, in Wellesley, MA. Baldwin served as executive director of the ACLU until 1950. "He leaves two legacies; more spacious liberty and the duty to keep fighting for it." This was said by an expert from the sources.
Purpose/// The purpose was to have one side hold the other side hostage being able to hold tens of thousands of people. The conditions were made hard with bad health, weather, and no good food.
Conclusion/// in conclusion Life in the prison camps were not good. Prisoners had a tough life and was hard to survive.
