Project Description:

Encircled by tennis and paddle courts, elevated to stand above them and designed to provide interior and exterior sightlines to each, the Carriage Club Tennis Pavilion is both utilitarian in purpose and exquisite in its presentation.

The building’s progressive footprint and rooflines suggest shot-making angles in the sports it serves, and its integration with the existing courts caught more than one judge’s attention. Club members are afforded a pro shop and support spaces, heated viewing patios and hospitality opportunities in a warm, contemporary environment that blends abundant glazing, cross-laminated timber, standing-seam metal, cast-in-place concrete and stone. According to one panelist, “Even the light fixtures perfectly play off the building form.”

The result is a nontraditional landmark that still manages to respect the historic private campus it shares with swimming and ice sports facilities.

“This project’s design is a beautiful sculptural solution on a complex existing site,” another judge noted. “The play of indoor-outdoor spaces and high-quality detailing are very successful aesthetically and enhance the patron experience.”

“The designers made an efficient footprint feel dynamic at every turn. All the corners and leftover spaces became great little viewing areas and patios.” — Steve Chung

“A well-crafted and thoughtful plan solution results in a small architectural gem hidden within the courts.” — William Schenck
