Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born February 2, 1977 in Barranquilla Colombia. Her name meaning "women full of grace". When she was quite young she showed a love for music and talent her parents considered remarkable. Honoring her Latino and Arabic heritage in her music, she was able to write her first song at the age of 8 and her first deal at 13. Along with her getting a modeling job since she was in beauty contests yet the job was never fully signed for it to happen. Though that was the start of her signing her first recording contract with Sony Music Colombia.

After the release of her first two albums, they never got attention so promptly they flopped. Though once this occurred Shakira took reins of her third album making it involved in every aspect of production. With the beginning success of the albums, Shakira became a superstar in the Spanish language music markets. The genre of her music is Latin pop, involving an audience of listeners in the Hispanic area.

Her fifth album entering the English language market with its lead single "Whenever, Wherever", it was the best single of 2002. It became debuted at number three on the U.S Billboard 200 chart, selling over 200,000 records it's first week. This album had a background that consisted of issues and themes that related to love.
