The Book Thief Themes By- PJ Ausmus

Theme #1: Colors Have Power

"Colors aren't just found in rainbows."

"People observe the colors of a day only at it's beginnings and ends, but to me it's quite clear that a day merges through a multitude of shades and intonations, with each passing moment. A single hour can consist of thousands of different colors. Waxy yellows, cloud-spat blues. Murky darknesses. In my line of work, I make a point to notice them" (Zusak 4).

A lot of people look at colors on a baseline level, but they can have such a deeper meaning. The light blues and yellows of the beautiful world can bring happiness and optimism to peoples lives. While just adding red and black to a canvas can move a mood to anger and sadness. In the book, Death talks about how all the colors you see in the world have a deeper meaning than what you think you see, proving that colors have extreme powers.

In the article "The Meaning of Colors", they talk about the deeper meaning behind the colors you see in your everyday life. It shows how you can manipulate people into a certain mindset just by the type of colors you use. They have more power than people realize. Colors can help and hurt a situation, but most certainly set the mood in all situations in life.

Theme #2: Friendship Breaks Barriers

"Friends are there when the tide turns."

"The card is in this." It was a book. "You should put the map in here, too, and the directions. And there's a key-taped to the inside cover." He clicked open the case as quietly as he could and planted the book like a bomb. "I'll be back in a few days" (Zusak 140).

Although Max's friend could easily be killed for helping out a Jew in this situation, he brings him as much food and supplies as he can just because he is a true friend. In the time he is living in, he doesn't agree with the terrible things that are happening to people like Max. But, he also doesn't really have a choice, he has to follow the Nazi Party or he will be executed as well. He is doing all that he can to help his friend, that is the definition of a true friend.

The song "Count On Me", by Bruno Mars, illustrates the true meaning of being there for the people you love. Through the great successes to the darkest failures, staying by their side and being the person to keep them going is complete friendship. The old saying goes "I would rather have 1 real friend than 100 fake friends". This is well covered in the song. Finding the people that want the best for you in life is extremely important.

Theme #3: Love never dies

"True love never dies, it only gets stronger with time."

"She did not say goodbye. She was incapable, and after a few more minutes at his side, she was able to tear herself from the ground. It amazes me what humans can do, even when streams are flowing down their faces and they stagger on, coughing and searching, and finding" (Zusak 536).

Liesel continues to show how strong of feelings she has for Rudy, especially in this scene. Before even going to see her Mama and Papa, after a terrible disaster that killed them all, she goes over to her best friend with the lemon colored hair. She leaned down and finally kissed him. After years of struggle, triumph and adventure, these two friends became even more than that. Although it was too late, Liesel finally shows Rudy how much he really means to her.

This particular "This I Believe" essay talks about how you can never stop loving someone. You either never loved them, or you always will. For Liesel and Rudy, they always loved each other, even if they didn't show it in the traditional ways. When you have someone that means that much to you, you'll always stick with them no matter what. But, like they always say "If you love something, let it go". Love will always be stronger than the obstacles life throws at you.

Summative Theme: Love Never Dies

This is my grandfather, one of the last days I had with him. He passed away 2 years ago.
