In Brown versus Board of Education, the Supreme Court found that segregated classroom denied children like Linda Brown in equal education.

The decision said: "in these days, it is doubtful that any child may reasonably be excepted to succeed in life if he is denied the opportunity of an education. Such as an opportunity... must be made available to all equal terms."

In September, governor Orvil Faubus called out the states national guard to stop African Americans from entering Central high school.

When a federal judge ruled that the governor had broken the law, Faubus removed the National Guard.

Rosa Parks was a civil rights activist as early as the 1940s.

One of her more famous quotes was: "I do the very best I can to look up on life with optimism and hope and looking forward to a better day... yet it pains me that there is still a lot of racism."

In the 1950s Dr. Martyn Luther King Junior, became a leader of the civil rights movement.

One of his quotes was, "I have the audacity to believe that people everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits. Dr. King was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee.
