Why Board Certification matters…
I recently saw a patient that told me that I was “the 7th dermatologist they had seen for her rash.” There are several warning signs in medical practice the problem maybe more with the patient’s emotional condition rather than her physical condition but I gave her the benefit of the doubt and continued to get her story. In the end, I discovered that she had seen several non-dermatologist physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. She also had seen a couple of aestheticians that were counted in “the seven.” But she is not to blame for her mistake. It has become so confusing trying to sort out who is what. There are physicians that hold themselves out as dermatologists having not completed a dermatology residency or become board certified in dermatology. There are physician assistants and nurse practitioners that work in dermatology offices that patients confuse for actual dermatologists because they never actually see the dermatologist! The frustrating part about this is that nothing is illegal. At Atlas Dermatology, our pledge is that all patients seeking a diagnosis and treatment plan will see a board-certified dermatologist. While our care team may include physician extenders and medical assistants, they are part of a team headed by a board-certified dermatologist to allow us to provide care to our patients that exceeds all expectation.
Thanks and God bless,
