24th Street By: Maricruz Rodriguez

My family and I all grew up on 24th Street. My parents owned a store and we spent most of our time there. When my mom had my baby brother, she decided to give the store to my grandma who has owned it since. You will see us on 24th Street almost every day. We’ve created many memories there.

Grandma’s Store

El Gallo De Oro was first owned my my parents. When my parents owned the store, my brothers and I weren’t allowed to go. The store remained extremely busy and distractions did not help. My dad spent most of his days working the store on his own. Once my mom gave birth to my youngest brother they decided to give the store to my grandma. Everyone is my family now calls this place “Grandma’s Store.”

Last year in November, Valentina joined our family. She currently lives in Iowa and isn’t here in Omaha often. My aunt, her mom, surprised us with the news of them moving back to Omaha for a while. Valentina will now be able to grow up here like everyone else.

Santa Fe

One of our favorite places on 24th Street is the ice cream shop called Santa Fe. We have been able to grow close with the family who owns it. Both my grandmas’ business and this business opened around the same time and have been open since then.

My family and I have experienced many festivals and events that have taken place here. One of our favorite events is Cinco de Mayo. Not only does it bring my family closer, but other families as well. This day is crowned with joy and happiness.
