This gas mask is from Chernobyl, a nuclear meltdown in 1980's Russia. This cover works well for the book because Russia was not prepared for the nuclear accident, just like Davids neighborhood was not prepared. This picture captures an eerie feeling due to the creepy nature of the 1986 accident in Pripyat.
