Newsletter 5th November 2021

Headteacher Comment

This week we welcomed everyone back into school after our first-ever two week half term. I hope that you all enjoyed the additional week and the extra time to relax and recuperate after a busy first term.

Of course, it was not all rest for all of Greenfields' children: 48 excited members of Years Five and Six enjoyed the first half term week away in the Lake District at the Outward Bound Centre on the banks of Ullswater with Mrs Tyrrell-Smith, Miss Kenny and me. Please read the article further down the Newsletter to find out more about our adventurous week.

Finally, as we are in the season of celebrations of light and fireworks, I'd like to first wish 'Happy Diwali' to all members of the Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist communities celebrating this celebration of love and light, and also wish everyone a safe Bonfire Night and fireworks this November 5th.

Have a lovely weekend

Mrs Appleby

Congratulations Ladybirds!

You might remember that in 2019, Greenfields Primary School won the prestigious Northampton Education Award for 'Primary School of the Year'. This year we are delighted that our Greenfields Nursery been nominated for 'Nursery of the Year' at this year's Northampton Education Awards, and the Nursery has been shortlisted for the final!

The amazing Nursery team, led by Mrs Casey has done a fantastic job with the Nursery from its opening until now. Hundreds of children have passed through the Nursery doors and have experienced outstanding learning and care from our dedicated staff.

I am sure you will join me in congratulating Mrs Casey, and her team for this outstanding achievement and wish them luck in bringing home the winner's award on Friday 26th November.

School Photographs

During the school day on Wednesday 10th November your child/children will have their individual and sibling photos taken. Please ensure your child arrives at school on time and is smartly dressed in clean, full school uniform. This must include a red logo jumper or cardigan and a school tie if your child is in Year 3-6. Attached is the school uniform policy, please take time to have a look to check that your child has the correct uniform. If you need to purchase any school uniform, you can visit www.karlsports.co.uk or go to their store on Trafalgar Road in Kettering where they have everything in stock.

Happy Diwali

The children in ‘Let’s Chill!’ Club have loved creating Diwali Rangoli patterns this week in their club. They looked at the Diwali festival, celebrated across the world, and created their own designs on the playground. Happy Diwali everyone!

Autumn Art

In the Two-Year Olds' Room the children have been exploring Autumn. Rummaging through other leaves in the garden, they have explored the textures of pine cones, carved into pumpkins, as well as creating their own spooky spider and pumpkin art.

Nursery

Mr President

During Black History Month, Marvellous Meerkats have been exploring the life and presidential achievements of President Barack Obama. The Year Three children worked hard to gather interesting facts for their non-fiction report.

Outward Bound Adventures

The first week of the half term was an adventurous one for a lucky group of Year Five and Six children. They visited the Outward Bound Centre (OWB), which is set on the shores of Ullswater in the Lake District – five hours away by coach! Working in groups with the OWB expert instructors, the children climbed to the top of fells (small mountains) around the lakeside, canoed across the lake, climbed up waterfalls, swam in the wild waters of the lake (sometimes even by moonlight!) and became more and more resilient and adventurous as the week went on. The focus of the week was the Generation Green programme that aims to provide young people with a connection to nature and help them to think more about the natural world. A huge ‘thank you’ to Mrs Appleby, Mrs Tyrrell-Smith and Miss Kenny for taking the children during their half term holiday!

As we returned on the Friday evening, exhausted, the children had climbed higher, swum wilder, paddled harder than they imagined, and even learned to organise their own outdoor kit! It was the perfect way to develop our values: aspiration, ambition, respect, and above all, courage.

Greenfields is delighted to have already booked placed for a return visit for October half-term next year, so if your child is in Years Four or Five this year, they will be eligible to attend – keep an eye out for notifications. Here’s some of our favourite memories.

Outward Bound 2021

This week Year One learned all about Diwali celebrations. They heard the story of Diwali with Sita and Rama and created their own chalk Rangoli patterns on the playground. Sahibdeep, one of the pupils in the class told the rest of the group about how his family celebrate Diwali and the children created their own henna patterns to decorate the classroom.

Year One

Space Walking

This week in their Talk for Reading lessons, Year One heard the story of the 'Man on the Moon (A Day in the Life of Bob)' by Simon Bartram. They loved hearing about Bob's job as an astronaut and spotted all the cheeky aliens hiding in the story. There were lots of them and they were very sneaky! The children used a Virtual Reality (VR) headset to explore the International Space Station and listened to astronaut, Tim Peake, tell them about how it works. They also used a virtual reality tablet to go on a space walk outside the shuttle. They saw the stars, the sun and Earth below their feet! It made the class chuckle when they let go on the Space Shuttle and floated around in space but some children got a little scared when they got too near the sun! Aaron was so inspired by our story that he built his own space rocket!

These have been updated for the classes in 2021-22, so click on the link for the class you will be in in September.

Teachers are looking forward to posting their ‘Flipping Greenfields’ videos every Friday next term in time for the weekend. Each one is all about next week’s learning, so will get your child prepared for a flying start on Monday. Research shows that children who feel prepared for the coming week are less anxious about school, happier to get up and go on a Monday morning and achieve better than those who are not.
