Primacy of the Pope

There have always been opponents to the pope’s authority and universal jurisdiction over the Church, also called papal primacy. The teaching was reaffirmed several times.

Primacy of Peter

St. Paul acknowledges that Peter is the first to have received an appearance from the Risen Lord: “he appeared to Cephas (Peter), then to the Twelve” (1 Cor 15:5).

First Vatican vs. Second Vatican

The First Vatican Council further defined papal infallibility. The Second Vatican Council and the popes that followed have worked to restore unity with the Orthodox Church.
