Celebrating 25 Years of One Design Experience The Reichel/pugh and melges team

Successful One Design classes have long been an integral part of the Reichel/Pugh DNA. Designed by Reichel/Pugh in 1992, built by Melges Performance Sailboats and first raced in 1993, the Melges 24 sparked the sportboat revolution around the world. To date, over 900 boats have been sold and the 2016 world championships saw 74 boats competing more than 20 years after its launch. Click to read more as Olympian and Melges 24 World Champion tactician Dave Hughes explains how the fleet has evolved over the past decade, describes the realities of building a team and rigging the boat, and shares techniques from the 2016 World Champion team - Embarr.

Simply put, the Melges 24 is still the best sport-boat ever built. It was ahead of its time when introduced in the early 1990's and it's still the gold-standard today. Challengers come and go, but we all tend to circle back to the Melges 24. It's fast, lively, feels great to drive, can handle the full range from calm and flat to big breeze and waves—all the things you look for in a class. - Dave Hughes, 2016 Melges 24 World Champion

The Melges 24’s overwhelming success paved the way for a long standing relationship between Melges Performance Sailboats and Reichel/Pugh designing and developing one design class such as the Melges 32’ and 20’ sportboats , 17’ scow and 14’ dingy. These classes continue to set the benchmark for high-performance, one design racing, attracting top sailors of all ages to the classes each year.

Earlier this year, Melges Performance Sailboats introduced the Melges World League (MWL), a racing platform that will unite multiple Class circuits for the 2017 season. Designed to increase rivalry and enhance the overall racing experience, the League will include the Melges 20 and Melges 32 with over 140 teams, representing 20 nations spanning the North American, European and Asian regions.

The 2017 Melges 20 World Championship will be hosted by New York Yacht Club in Newport, Rhode Island October 2-7.

Designated as the sportboat of choice for the New York Yacht Club’s 2016 Resolute Cup, the progressive Melges 20 raised the bar and set a new standard for Corinthian style, one-design racing. Find photos from the event from Paul Todd / Outside Images.

“My father and I have owned and raced many different boats. The Melges 20 is the best sailing I have ever done. I love it!” - Michael Illbruck, 2016 Melges 20 World Champion

Most recently, the Melges 14 has entered a new arena in the dinghy market, promising fast, fun sailing to racers. Working closely with Melges, the 14 was designed and engineered by Reichel/Pugh. It was honored as Sailing World’s 2016 Boat of the Year – Best Dinghy. With fleets in North America, Europe, and Asia, the Melges 14 is emerging as a true high performance one-design racing boat, just two years after its introduction.
