Business Development Engineer We're Hiring

Want to be on the leading edge of some of the most advanced timber structures in North America?

As a business development representative also proficient in structural engineering (P. Eng., PE, or SE preferred) joining our growing team, you will work on high profile timber project opportunities with some of North America’s leading clients and architects. You will have the opportunity to liaise with these clients as you manage your sales pipeline, develop preliminary engineering schemes and perform cost estimates.

StructureCraft is a unique structural engineering, manufacturing and construction company that specializes in timber structures, incorporating steel, glass, concrete and other materials. We typically act as the structural Engineer of Record for our structures, and our vertically integrated approach allows us to take a holistic approach to optimizing our designs, providing significant value add to our clients.

Our team pushes the boundaries in complex geometry, optimization, digital fabrication, material testing and research. We are involved in mass timber structures, long span roofs, tall wood buildings, free-form timber structures and bridges. Our work has been recognised nationally and internationally, including numerous engineering awards for innovation in timber construction. We create signature structure for our clients.

We are located in the beautiful Fraser Valley, just an hour east of Vancouver, and close to the growing Abbotsford airport.

The Team

Our small but agile Business Development team plays a leading role in our organization as the face for all new clients and project opportunities. The BD team has a wide range of responsibilities including initial client contact, conceptual engineering, generating and tracking leads, estimating and proposals, and other preconstruction tasks prior to the successful award and handover of a project. We regularly work with leading owners, architects and contractors from around North America and Europe. As a full-service company, the BD team regularly collaborates with all our other company departments including engineering, project management, shop carpenters, and site teams.

Role Details

  • Technical Sales (30-40%). Generate, receive, and take responsibility for project or client “leads” via phone, email or in-person meetings, using your knowledge of the company’s past projects and strategic goals to describe business model, hash out potential scope and client drivers. Perform “Go No Go” analysis on project leads to determine suitability as it fits in with company workload and key sectors. Develop written project proposals, informed by your understanding of the project’s particular design elements, constraints and scope items. Communicate confidence to clients.
  • Conceptual/Preliminary Engineering (20-30%). Concept scheming and sketching to ideate efficient and innovative structural solutions for coordination within the department and presentation to clients and architects. Generate 2D/3D structural and visual models for more complex structures, to inform sizing of elements / early pricing, and for presentation of architectural renders to clients.
  • Budget Estimating (20-30%). Clearly understand the client needs and key project factors which influence costs. Perform a brief budget estimate of costs and communicate this to client with a concise proposal. Get strategic feedback on budget pricing from client.
  • Detailed Estimating / Preconstruction (10-20%). Perform a detailed review/takeoff of drawings and specifications and understand how they relate to our scope. Liaise with our structural engineers, General Contractors and Architects to clearly communicate and receive feedback on the project as it relates to scope, schedule, site conditions, sustainability requirements, etc. Communicate and receive cost and schedule feedback from suppliers and subcontractors. Develop a concise but comprehensive sales estimate of costs for the project. Handover successful projects to Project Management, ensuring continuity of relationships while final scope and pricing is established.

Position Requirements

  • PE, P.Eng., SE or equivalent with a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering (or a related Engineering Degree).
  • Prefer 4-5 years of experience in engineering or construction industry, but recent graduates with a strong, applicable skillset may apply also. At least 1-2 years of experience working as structural engineer (prefer timber engineering).
  • Great communication skills, verbally and written (strong grammar/spelling).
  • Adept at interaction with clients and business development calls
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals
  • Detailed personality with an eye for accuracy, ability to multi-task, service-oriented.
  • Significant experience with Excel, development of smart spreadsheets. Good at quick math.

Experience considered a bonus

  • Experience working with 3D modelling software such as Rhino/Grasshopper/Sketch-Up an asset (conceptual models). Experience with Finite Element software (R-FEM, SAP2000, ETABS) an asset.
  • Knowledge and use of Canadian/American codes is an asset

Who will you be working with? You will be working with many of our staff, but reporting to our Business Development Lead.
