Banking
- Inform your bank you are travelling abroad. Otherwise your card will be blocked the first time you use it
- If you are using a credit card, make sure you have a plan with no international fees
- Always carry cash: many places in Italy do not accept credit cards
- Best place to get cash is an ATM: check with your bank on foreign transaction fees
- Bring some cash with you. DO NOT go to the currency exchange booth in the airport: it may look like a good deal but there are hidden fees (usually hidden because they are called “taxes”)
- The ATM in the airport is fine (BUT NOT THE CURRENCY EXCHANGE BOOTH!!)
Packing
- Do yourself a favor and pack light
- Bring a carry-on suitcase or small duffle bag for travel during the program
- Comfortable walking shoes with a good tread
- Unless they are essential, buy toiletries, etc. in Italy
- Plan to wash clothes and bring items that can hang dry quickly
- Consider that you might want to purchase clothes in Italy
- Make sure you have adapters and converters for your electronic equipment
