Arrogance How jody BECOMES a poWerful FIGURE within the town ThrouGhout chapter 5.

People in the town have started to notice the change Jody is making and start to recognize him for it. This is supported by the quote "De town wouldn't be nothin' if it wasn't for him." (49), in which they recognize the fact that he is the reason things have changed the way they have.

They all follow his lead but hide the fact that Jody is so controlling within the community. He has his way because they do nothing to challenge his ways and to drive the town forward in their own way. This is supported by "They bowed down to him rather, because he was all of these things, and then again he was all of these things because the town bowed down." (50).

The quote "We bend which ever way he blows" (49) shows the influence Jody has over the people throughout the town. They have no choice but to follow him because he is the driving force behind what has happened to the town.
