Welcome Back 8th March 2021

World Book Day

Thursday 4th March

To celebrate World Book day this year we have planned exciting activities in school and for children at home.

Children and staff are invited to wear pyjamas, or snuggly clothes for the day and bring their favourite book to share, if you are at home wear something comfy and get your favourite book ready - send us a seesaw post to let us know what the book is and why you like it!

The morning will consist of activities which encourage the love of reading - activities will be posted on seesaw for children at home to take part.

Staff will have recorded their favourite books and set activities using seesaw.

The afternoon sessions will be designing and making their scarecrows, then putting them in the garden - post pictures on seesaw - we would love to see them!

Book Character Scarecrow Competition - Join in the fun!!

As part of our World Book Day celebrations, we will be holding a book character scarecrow building competition and would love to brighten up our local area with colourful scarecrows based on book characters!

We are working in collaboration with Worsbrough Common Primary and our aim is to create a scarecrow trail which children can follow when out taking their daily exercise, adhering with current government guidelines.

This is open to ALL children whether they are attending school or learning at home.

We have lots of prizes available. There will be 2 prizes for each class as well as an overall winner and 3 runners up. You can enter as a family and prizes will be awarded for collaborative efforts. All children will receive a prize for taking part.

Please do not worry if you do not live in the local area- we would still encourage you to enter and will travel far and wide to see any WGPS Scarecrows! We could even transport them to display at school if you wish.

The deadline for entries is THURSDAY 4TH MARCH (World Book day). You can submit entries by completing the Microsoft Forms below and sending photographs to your child’s seesaw account. We would also love to see your scarecrows on twitter by using @wardgreenschool with the hashtag #HCATScarecrows.

We hope that people will leave their scarecrows up for a few weeks afterwards to form part the trail and would like to make a map that people can follow to find them.

If you would like your scarecrow to be part of our competition, please fill in the form HERE

Virtual Euro Disney - Here we come!!

Friday 5th March should be the last day of this lockdown ( hopefully it will be the last!!) To celebrate all the fantastic work and effort from all of our children we are going to make the last day of lockdown a day to remember......we are all going on a school trip....a virtual school trip to Euro Disney!!

We have planned an exciting day of fun and learning for children in school and children at home. Staff will be visiting all children at home next week to bring each child a Disney box of goodies and challenges to complete.

We would like to give children an opportunity to dress up as Disney characters, if they wish to.....don't forget themes such as Star Wars, Spiderman, Toy Story etc as well as princesses & Mickey Mouse.

Each year group has a landmark which you would see if you were travelling to Euro Disney. The morning will consist of each class making a replica of their designated landmark. They then have to use the model and information gathered through the morning to create a display on their classroom windows so that we can all learn about the landmarks that we would pass on our journey. Everyone at home will also be making the landmark and will have activities scheduled on seesaw....you will be able to post pictures of your models on seesaw and display your information on a window too ( there will be prizes for the best models). You will need to start collecting cereal packets, toilet roll tubes etc to use on your model!

We will then have an American style lunch of hotdogs with sweetcorn ( jacket potato will still be available) and an American Cookie for desert. If you are at home you too could have hotdogs or make your lunch into a Disney theme such as a sandwich in the shape of Mickey Mouse ears - it would be fun to see your lunch pictures on seesaw too!!

The children in school will then pass through the entrance to Euro Disney, all children at home or in school will then access links for virtual tours of the various parts of Euro Disney, maybe you will arrive on the Eurostar train?- links will be announced on seesaw too so that you can take part at home....watch out for the rollercoaster rides!!

During the day, Foundation and Key Stage 1 will all have a zoom call from a very special guest....a disney character from Euro Disney!!!!!! Class teachers will send a link out on seesaw for children at home to take part too!

In your Disney boxes there will be challenges for you to then complete - post your work on seesaw, it will be great to see!!

To finish we will then be watching one of the parades/special events from Euro Disney - links again will be available on seesaw for everyone to enjoy! This is when you will be able to enjoy the popcorn in your boxes.

Return to school - Monday 8th March

The Government have recently announced that all children must return to school on Monday 8th March. We can't wait to see everyone and welcome you all back to school.

The arrangements are similar to the Autumn term and I will email out further detailed information on Monday 1st March to each parent.

To ensure no further lockdowns occur, there will still be :-

  • staggered start and end times , please do not arrive early as the guidance states very clearly that parents must not gather at the gates particularly at these times. Please disperse quickly once children have been collected or dropped off...and maintain social distancing at all times when queueing or walking across the site - COVID is still a real risk to everyone - especially 0-59 year olds.
  • encourage the wearing of facemasks whilst you are waiting to collect/drop off children as well as whilst on the school site.
  • Children will be in a class bubble and will remain in their class bubble at playtimes, lunchtimes etc to minimize any mixing.
  • Washing of hands, respiratory hygiene, good ventilation and social distancing will still be undertaken and expected in classrooms
  • Staff in school will minimize contact with each other and will have lunch breaks with only colleagues in their key stage...where they will maintain social distancing at all times.
  • Additional cleaning of all toilets, classroom tables, door handles etc will take place over lunch time.
  • All children will be expected to wear school uniform.

May I take this opportunity to pass my thoughts and condolences to anyone in our community that has lost a loved one to this awful pandemic - our thoughts are with you!

Well done, it has been a monumental effort from everyone in our community to keep spirits high, supporting each other at home as well as maintaining high quality education for the children of Ward Green - let's make sure this is the final lockdown!!
