Public Libraries in Disaster Situations--Survey

Dear librarians and library staff members,

We are conducting a research study on the role of public libraries in disaster situations and we seek your input. Specifically, we are interested in the public librarians’ perceptions regarding the services that public libraries can offer when emergencies and disasters occur and act as first or second responders to alleviate the situation. We would like to know your views on the topic as a library professional. Your input is very valuable in helping us identify the issues, challenges, and constraints faced by public libraries in this regard. Based on the findings of this study, we plan on further developing strategies and methods that could assist public libraries to prepare for, and respond to their local communities when disaster occurs. The survey will take about 15-20 minutes. Please follow the link below for the survey.

Census 2020

Katherine Dillon from the US Census will discuss what we can expect, potential ways to partner, and the importance of counting everyone during a workshop about the census at 10 am Thursday, October 10 at the Southern Adirondack Library System.

We encourage all directors and youth services staff to attend since young children are historically under-counted.

Families impacted both by autism and developmental disabilities live in communities of all sizes. Providing programming for this demographic is an impactful way for the library to be an inclusive and supportive resource for families. Sensory Storytime is a targeted approach that adapts storytime with theories and practices from many fields to create an experience that is fun for all kids and appropriate for those with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

In this interactive webinar program, Jill Burket Ragase will give you a variety of tools that you will be able to use to:

  • Select program appropriate titles and activities for Sensory Storytimes
  • Present and adapt programs for multiple ages/audiences as well as programming area/library sizes
  • Create and deliver programs that allow children to continue learning and skill building beyond storytime.

Learn the ins and outs of presenting a sensory storytime from an experienced librarian who also happens to parent a developmental disabled child. We’ll cover the librarian tips and tricks as well as things you can do to enhance inclusion and make this segment of your patron population feel welcome!

Presenter: Jill Burket Ragase has eagerly shared her passion for collection development and Youth Services as an Independent Library Consultant for four years. She is the former Juvenile Collection Development Librarian for the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, an SLJ 5 star library and winner of the National Medal for Museum and Library Services. She is also the proud parent of two, yes two sets of boy/girl twins with her husband Mark in Cincinnati, OH.

Imagine if one of the first public places families go with their new babies is to the public library…and then they never stop!

In this webinar, participants will learn how the library can welcome, celebrate, and support families with new babies, helping them to develop an early and lifelong love of libraries. Participants will also gain knowledge in positioning their library as an early literacy leader in the community, through effective partnership building and outreach. Multiple resources will be shared, including free templates for Baby’s First Library Card that libraries may customize and use.

The webinar will be presented by Brigid Hubberman, Founder of the Children’s Reading Connection, and long-time literacy innovator and advocate. More information about can be found at the Children’s Reading Connection homepage.
