Reception Newsletter Autumn 2 - Issue 1, Monday 8 November 2021

We hope you have had an enjoyable half term break. A huge thank you to all who attended our virtual Parents’ Evening. It was lovely to see so many faces and we hope you enjoyed hearing about how your child has settled into life at Avondale. We are all very impressed with how independent they have become during their first half term at school and your support certainly makes a difference. If you didn’t manage to speak to us, please contact us at school so we can share with you how your child has settled in.

We are looking forward to another fun-filled half term. This half term is always very busy and exciting with the preparations for Christmas. As part of our preparation the Reception children will be taking part in a Christmas performance. More details about this will follow shortly.

For the next few weeks we will continue our theme – Autumn Days. Please follow the link below for more details.

This half term the focus for our weekly PSED sessions will be – Celebrating Differences. As part of this unit, the pupils will explore – What I am Good At, I’m Special, I’m Me! Different Families, Houses & Homes, Making Friends.

This week in Phonics, we will be revising and consolidating Set 1 letters – s a t p and i. We will practise these sounds daily and play lots of games to ensure we can quickly recognise and recall each sound. During our Literacy session we will use our blending skills to read words containing these sounds. We will also learn how to form each of these letters correctly. Pupils will be encouraged to practise these letters in a variety of media e.g. glitter, shaving foam, flour, as well as with pencils.

Our focused text this week is the lovely story Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. We will share this story and explore new vocabulary e.g. marsh, orchards, prairie meadows, gliding, lake, flock, lonesome, rustle. We will talk about who is in the story and where they went. We will put our creative skills to use and create our own Leaf Man using natural objects. Pupils will be encouraged to use their phonic knowledge to write a name label to match their picture.

We will learn about autumn leaves and that some trees are deciduous and some are evergreen. Pupils will be encouraged to identify autumnal colours and use these to create some autumnal arts and crafts.

Our focus in Maths is number 4. We will explore different ways to represent number 4 and the composition of 4. Try going on a number hunt around the house and see how many 4s you can find! We will also learn how to form this numeral.

On Thursday we will create our own Reception poppy wreaths and lay these at our Remembrance Day assembly. We will read the story Captain Tom Moore and learn about how this outstanding man achieved incredible things in his life, yet began life as a child with a dream.

Blackburn Rovers will be in school on Friday working with the Reception pupils and helping to develop our fundamental movements.

Please login to our Purple Mash blog to find resources to support this week’s learning at home.

Don’t forget, reading bags should be brought to school every day. Please remember to sign your child’s reading record book each time they read at home. If pupils have read 5 times then they receive 3 reward points and their name is entered into our reading raffle. Library books should be returned on Friday for changing. This week your child will bring home in their reading folder an A4 sheet containing Set 1 letters. These letters are to keep at home. Please cut the letters up and practise saying each letter sound as part of their reading homework. Once your child confidently recognises these letters then try making some simple 3 letter words for them to blend and read.

School Lunches

Please see below a copy of our school lunch menu. This week (week commencing 08.11.21) will be Menu 3.

Please note menus are subject to change. A file is kept onsite of all ingredients used in the production of our food. This is to comply with the regulations regarding allergens. If your child has an allergy and you would like to see this file, please contact the main office.

Please ensure all items of clothing are clearly named, especially any hats, gloves and scarves. P.E. days this half term will be Friday. Please ensure that your child comes in their P.E kit and removes any jewellery.

There will be another parental drop-in session on Thursday 25 November 2021, 3.15-3.45pm. This session is held straight after school and is very informal. The Reception staff are available should you wish to come and say hello, have a chat about your child or just look around the classroom.
